Poll: What should I name my Commander Shepherd?

You could make his first name Mister, ensuring a few hilarious scenes where Shepherd insists on being overly formal with everyone he meets. Or you could name him Who as a nod to a certain Abbott and Costello sketch...

I've just bought the bundle too, great deal. I had ME 1 on 360, but never got around to finishing it and traded it in.

Now I've got a chance to catch up for ME 3.

I named my male Shepherd, O'Mally

honestly, theres no point in naming him anyway. none of the other characters in the game will address you by anything other than simply, "Shepard" (or Commander).

in fact, the only time you will ever even see the first name you come up with, is when you are entering it in.

But if you INSIST on being boring, then Marcus, Dirk, Xavier, Leon, Duncan, Godfrey, Bernard, or Vincent will do. If you ALSO insist on being some namby-pamby goody two-shoes in-bed-by-eight type (let's face it, Renegade is just WAY more fun), can't hurt to name him after one of the Roman emperors (the obvious choices being Nero or Augustus).

Aurelian is a good one too... he was also known as the Restorer of the World, which seems appropriate

Well the first name of your character is literally never mentioned in the game, so just pick a name you think sounds nice.

Or you could make shepard look like yourself IRL(sorta) and name it after yourself. Ya know, increase immersion or something.

My sister just got me the Mass Effect Pack off of Steam today, partly because my birthday is coming up soon and partly because YOU CAN CURRENTLY GET THEM BOTH FOR TEN DOLLARS ON STEAM, BUT ONLY TODAY. Squee! Anyways, I have 5 hours to kill and during that time, I need to come up with a good name for my Commander Shepard. Only problem is, I have an extreme case of indecisiveness and I cannot for the life of me decide on a good name for ol' Shep. So I thought: Why not ask the good ol' people on the Escapist?

A couple of rules here:

Hi Battleaxx90, I've taken some creative writting liberty to streamline your rules to better answer them.

1. I'm going with a Male Paragon Shepard. That means mean-sounding names are out.
2. It has to sound heroic.
3. No "joke" names.
4. Be creative; don't just post a name just because you named him that.
5. Try not to post any spoilers or advice here.
6. Finally, yes, I do plan on getting ME3 once it comes out.

Ok, well, John Shepard I believe is the default, so let's assume its either on the list (since it meets all criteria), or you want him to have a shred of individuality. For the Soldier, Paragon, Standard looking Shepard, most people would agree 'John' is definately his name.

Bland names are militaristic, like Steve, Peter, David, Andrew, blah blah, but they are still bland, so I'd avoid those.
I named him after me for my first male character, after a friend of mine (Jean-Paul, how awesome a name right?) I don't recall my third.

I would prefer to reccomend a J name, all my female characters (who were most played through with, Jessica and Jade), and since yours are male, I would like to sway away from Justin, Jason, Jonathon, and especially Jacob. Good J names could include Jeb, Jack, James or Jake (close to Jacob though still).

The biggest problem with name selection is how it sounds before 'Shepard', and s/he'll always be referred to as 'that' anyway (can't speak for ME3, but its still a good bet), otherwise, maybe look up some good Sci-Fi shows for good names (avoid Farscape and especially Stargate Atlantis, since ME can be seen to acidently rip off the main protaganist's name in the latter's show.), especially highly military based Sci-Fi's like Star Trek and Stargate should turn up great examples, just wiki the main characters.

Seriously though, high five. As for the last part, when I finish downlading the game sometime 'round tomorrow, I'm going to be holding a poll of my favourite names from this discussion. So far, the list looks like thus:
