EDIT: High school musical: The TV show, but with weirder fans.
I'd believe that.

It seems that only one other person posting here actually likes the show. i7omahawki summed it up pretty well, but I'd like to add that other than a few errors here or there, it's pretty well-written. I would actually rank Sue Sylvester (the "villain" of the show) as one of the greatest antagonists I've ever seen on TV. That and she's played by the crazy boss from 40-Year-Old Virgin, so there's that.

Lately, the music has been my least favorite part of the show, because I've come to actually care about the plot. Despite being a pretty standard teen drama, the characters actually feel distinct from each other and everyone gets their moments. My only complaints about the show:

1) The entire Christmas episode where they stupidly glossed over the fact that two characters who were talking about how awesome Christmas is were Jewish. Oddly specific, but it bugged the hell out of me.
2) They keep testing my suspension of disbelief when the characters talk about having no budget yet do numbers that in context would take thousands if not millions to put together.
3) The mash-ups of two different songs, while decent at first, just degrade into awfulness as the series goes on. When they put together Anyway You Want It and another Journey song that I didn't recognize, for example, I wanted to reach through the screen and punch whoever it was who put it together. It was awful. Most of the number aren't mash-ups, though, so it isn't a big deal.

Those are my only complaints about the show, and as you can see, they're all pretty specific. The show as a whole is pretty fun to watch. I thought I'd hate it when it first came out and didn't watch it, but then I watched part of an episode at a friend's house and was hooked immediately. At least give it a try, don't listen to the people saying it's worthless.

EDIT: Sorry about the wall of text here.

High school. And singing. And when people in my age/peer group say that they like it, I roll my eyes and sigh a bit.
It is freakin awesome! And this from a radical right wing Republican that sees it pushing the homosexual agenda to the nth degreee.

OK, I'm not really against that agenda... I really don't care one way or the other, and I find its flamboyant gay character to be very interesting and I want to see more of him.

I like the cookie cutter characters, football jock, evil sexy cheer leader and I often think their cover tunes improvements on the original (River Deep, Mountain High duet a major stand out).

Sure, some, er, most, radical conservatives would find the socially sexually subversive messages of the show unacceptable, in TV's wasteland, I find so much positive in this show that it is a weekly ritual for me and my daughter to watch it together.

My son, of course, is apoplectic when we put it on. He prefers 50 Cent.

I watched the show until season 2. Season 2 is reaaaally bad.
So far, this season's most interesting subplot has been that Curt has found his Nirvana in a school totally acceping of gay kids... yet, I think it will be turning towards an objection of a homogonized, bland culture of enforced conformity. In some ways, season 2 has surpassed 1. Annnnd again, featured River Deep Mountain High. That was just awesome.

I managed an entire series so ill fill you in.

Its a show about hyperactive posturing idiots flailing about to the worst music in western civilisation in-between putrid moralising and laughably self indulgent angst. The only good character is a misanthropic gym teacher who keeps getting pushed aside to make way for more whiny pricks.

The show is a teenage girl thing I reckon. Or gay guy show.

EDIT: sorry if that last line sounds offensive
I was a little bit offended by that last line. A little. Mostly just because I'm neither a teenage girl nor a gay guy (18-year-old straight guy). I do understand that that's pretty much the demographic they're aiming for, but it bugs me when people poke fun for liking something that I'm not the target demographic for. I know you weren't, so I'm going to stop quite frankly being a bit whiny.

You don't need to know.
Pity I wasn't the first person to post, I would've said- if you don't know, then keep it that way.
I had the displeasure of viewing it for no more than five minutes.
In that time I witnessed the most overly the top feministic "boy" singing the most overly the top ballad-type cover of the Beatle's "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," while reminiscing in an over the top fashion about his recently deceased father.
Now, I have nothing against entertainment trying to make the viewer feel a certain way, but this section of the show was just beating the viewer over the head with a baseball bat of "emotion."
If you can stomach it, here's the clip I'm referring to:

To think this would bring a typical Glee fan to tears really makes me want to hold someone's hand.

I never understood the whole concept of it beyond "we're not popular, let's make a singing group and express ourselves by producing generic covers of popular songs"

but besides what I think is the skin-deep basic premise, it actually is a fucking good show. some characters get on your nerves sometimes (i challenge you to not at least once get pissed off by Kurt!) the show is actually really good. it's characters seem real for the most part, with only a very few slight dips into cliche characterisation.

and the songs, while it does tend to suffer from the general musical problem of songs being put into the story without proper motivation for them, they are good. sure, being covers they suffer from 'not as good as the original', but they're still good for what they are. they're covers, yes. but they're GOOD covers.

if you haven't figured it out, I'm a Glee fan. not a Gleek, i'm not THAT bad. it's just a damn good show.

Nothing. It has no plot, meaning, purpose or message. And I say this as someone who used to be in the fandom for it.

Basically, the show is about random one-liners interspersed with musical numbers and really bad attempts at drama.
Basically this. The first season had some clever pop culture commentary and the whole thing was presented in an ironic manner with a good sense of humor. For the second season they've decided to abandon all that for fan-service and cashing on covers. Plus yeah, pathetic attempts at drama.
Exactly why I used to like it, only to be very disappointed and lose interest in the second season. It wasn't like the first season was groundbreaking TV or anything, but at least it had a plot and a point to what was happening. Now, though, it has become all the things it was originally making fun of, and the fact that they constantly have to do tributes and bring in guest stars tells me they're already bankrupt for ideas. It's a train wreck of a mess to be honest. The only conceivable reason to keep watching is because of how BAD it is. It's perfect MST3K material, because it's easily the stupidest show on television.

Also, I hear they're doing Justin Bieber sometime this season. That should tell you where this show is right now; it is well past having jumped the shark. They're probably going to do "Whip My Hair" at this rate. *shakes head in shame*

Whats it about?...Uuh.. kids being uncool, BUT SUDDENLY its cool to be differenderp.
THIS! THIS! XD

I loathe Glee because their 'musical' side is covering songs which is pretty much everything 'musical' about them. Artists who create their own songs and work harder (I'll have to ask BonsaiK on that one) get beaten by a bunch of adults-as-teens that do something far easier.

The second they make their own songs sign me up. But I used to like Glee, I didn't care for the 'music' much back then. I watched it for the plot (Oooooooo) and as it progressed it extremely bored me. Those 2 factors keep me off and I don't see any of those changing so no thanks.

Do you enjoy different versions of (mostly?) perfectly good songs? (My opinion so don't go clicking the quote button.)

Do you enjoy shabby, average plots? (I'd watch it again to give a more thorough and detailed conclusion but I'd rather not.)

If yes to both, you'll love Glee!

It's pretty much 7th Heaven: The High School Musical.

The acting is alright, sometimes the melodrama reaches parody levels. Jane Lynch is awesome, obviously. Heather Morris is probably the big "break out actor" of the younger cast.

It's not a great show, but, not to stereotype, but gamers aren't the target audience, at all, so I'm not surprised most here dislike it.

It's an anvilicious comedy-drama about a bunch of losers in a glee club. The music is noticable autotuned (well, noticable if you know what autotuning sounds like), but still enjoyable and a lot of the songs are chosen for comedic/dramatic effect in the episode.

Because a lot of it is pop music, expect huge droves of people to complain any time the show is mentioned because they've decided that enjoying pop music in any way makes you a terrible, shallow person. Doubly so now that the show itself is popular.

Also, by no stretch of the imagination are ALL of the songs pop music. There's a lot of stuff like Bon Jovi, enough Journey that they lampshaded it in a recent episode, a lot more classic rock, and even some showtunes.

As mentioned, the drama tends to be extremely anvilicious, but the producers seem to have noticed this. They've taken it to the point where, as an adult, you'll probably just find it campy. Expect copious amounts of narm. The show does have some traditionally funny moments too (usually provided by the idiot cheerleader Brittany and the magnificent bastard played by Jane Lynch).

Overall, it's a unique, fun show and if you can get over all of the pretentions regarding popular things, it's a nice way to spend an hour every week and maybe even something to talk to normal people about.

Edit: Holy fuck. The advertising captcha I got with that one was a whole new low. It had the logo for Toyota Care (which I am familiar with thanks to having to type it in so many times now) and then had "Toyota ____" written on it. It asked me to fill in the blank. Now we're not even in the realm of product placement, we're actively testing brand recognition for people.

Not cool Escapist, not cool at all.

Its a comedy/musical show about a glee club. Hence the name 'Glee'. And that is basically about all I can tell you from first hand experience >_>

"Welcome to Glee, where every episode is the Musical Episode. Trust us, it's Better Than It Sounds.
Glee is about a high school teacher's attempts to organize the glee club while dealing with his own personal issues. The first episode alone featured music from such disparate sources as Journey and Guys And Dolls, and the show goes on to showcase everything from Charlie Chaplin to Lady Gaga.
The musical numbers are usually given an in-universe justification with the activities of the glee club, instead of seemingly springing fully formed from the minds of characters in normal situations, as with most musicals. The effect is very... postmodern. That Reminds Me Of A Song is in full effect. From time to time, an individual does just break into a full-on song and dance sequence with back-up dancers and props and so forth, and it cuts from location to location mid-stream like a music video; based on contextual clues these moments appear to be taking place in the individual's thoughts.
Tons of character stereotypes show up to the point of reviving a few Dead Horse Tropes."

a quick question, has anyone who posted on this forum hating it actualy seen the show?
Yeah I've seen Glee.

Or as I like to call it, Auto-Tune: The Series.

Glee is the plot of a modern film plot that is a celebration of musical pop culture cheapened by being reformed into the plot of a television show. It seems very cool at first, but the concept wears old very fast. Instead of remaining a celebration of music, it uses the popularity of other people's work instead of standing up on its own. Had it been a film, it likely would have been an underappreciated masterpiece that eventually saw its day. Instead it will be something that defines the last couple years of television, and in my opinion it does so in a negative light.

It isn't terrible, it just isn't a concept with any legs.
