Anything past Gold and Silver does not exist in my book.

Wow, I feel old now.

Those were the days....

First generation, no doubt. But that would apply to nearly every series out there. Original remains the best.

Already got Heart Gold on preorder. Yes, I'm shelling out for nostalgia.

EDIT: Dude! Twelve squared! I need to lie down.

Gold and Silver did have the biggest world to explore, which is why they are the best ones.

I'm gonna get HG, because some friends of mine are getting Soul Silver and because i played the original Gold as a kid
Umm...was Gold good? Did you get Ho-Oh? I only ever played Crystal buuuuuuut...I hear the Legendary dogs were different, depending on which version you bought? Which was your favourite, Raikou, Entai or Suicune?

I gotta say the second generation (Gold/Silver/Crystal) because it did the one thing no other pokemon game did: It let you go back to the first generation's area and conquer their gyms with a super-team. Plus, it made revisions to bugs in the original game (like how Ghosts couldn't hit Psychics), added in the day/night cycle and communication with other trainers, new types, re-working how old pokemon operated, held items and other long-running staples of the pokemon games.

In short, it was exactly what a sequel was supposed to do; it took what the first game did and expanded on it.
I despise the day night cycle. Waking up early to catch a fucking ladybug is bullshit.
Easy way to get around that is just to lie when they ask you to put in the time so that you can play both day and night at times that suit you. I did this for a night only game, cause Noctowl kicked ass
But then you can't catch the day pokemon.
You can if you plan it so that during the time of day you play the game it will go from late afternoon to evening in game. That way you can get both day and night at suitable times

As far as polished gameplay goes, the new ones are far superior however the fun I had with Red when pokemon was in its prime might be unmatched by any game.

1st gen has the best pokemon
2nd gen has (easily) the best world.
4th gen has the best gameplay

3rd gen just sucked.

Gold/Silver/Crystal. I loved that you could explore both Kanto and Johto. This makes me want to break out Crystal on my Game boy color.

PLANNING YOUR LIFE (any of it) AROUND A GAME IS STUPID THIS IS WHY I STOPPED PLAYING WOW.
Um.. I was saying you fit the in game time into your free time, not plan your life around it. Fair enough you don't like the day/night cycle, was just suggesting a way around it. But still no need to caps lock about it

I'd have to say the Gold/Silver/Crystal era. Had the best mix of gameplay, new pokemon, new places, and side quests. Once they got into the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald era, the pokemon started to look like they came from a Van Goh painting, and their addition of the Pokemon Contests I thought weren't needed. The addition of using two pokemon in certain battles was ok with me though.
