Wolfenstein 3D. Hell, I even remember the names for the easiest and hardest difficulty modes (Can I Play Too Daddy? and I Am Death Incarnate!, respectively). From there it was on to Heretic, Shadow Warriror, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, so on and so forth.

Then I was introduced to the original Counter-Strike. My world has not been the same since.

Just a note on the poll results.

Right now I'm seeing an odd trend; instead of the "normal curve" centred on the early 3D-rendered days, there are two equal-sized "spikes" to either side. There are a lot of people who got started in the sprite-based 2.5D days, and a lot who jumped in when the genre finally got it right on consoles.

I wonder if that trend will continue... it's not one I expected, truly.

Wolfenstein 3D. Mecha Hitler is an integral part of my childhood, as is hugging walls in order to find secret passages :p

Good old Halo. Although I didn't start playing it until 2005. I came in a little late, I suppose.

Goldeneye was probably the first shooter I played. I still have faint noir-style memories of playing deathmatch with nothing but throwing knives.

I want to say Goldeneye, but I think I actually played Wolfenstein 3D or possibly Doom first. I'm not that into FPSs, so meh.

Doom all the way. Doom was the first and only FPS I played until my parents bought me a copy of Quake II.

Well my first one I played was Golden Eye but to be fair I'm saying 2000s because I never really properly started and that was only at my friends house I played it so I am not sure if it is counted.
