i usually go for the fire pokemon
there are plenty more grass and water pokemon than fire
so it varies the game up a bit i find

Ahhhh (Looks back on life with wonder and love). It was a Charmander, and I was 7, oh good times. Thank you for this nostalgic thread. Poor Charmander he's in a box under my bed now.
Bulbasaur from Red. I remember picking him and then always wanting a Charmander, but I didn't want to start my game over. Eventually when I could pick my Charmander, I was attached to my Venasaur and it was hard moving on :c
Pikachu, complements of broken Pokemon Yellow. But Charmander when I actually had a choice, and what a choice it was, first two gyms are super effective against me, and I get to try and traverse a cave full of Pokemon that are super effective against me.
Whatever the grass starter is for that particular iteration.
HOWEVER I always capture whatever the first bird-type Pokemon is in the starting area shortly after and use it as my main for the rest of the game. Don't think there's one Pokemon game I haven't done this with. So while the Grass may be my technical starter the first bird/wind Pokemon I run across is in fact more like my starter/main.
