I knew that Opera, while built on IE, sued Microsoft for not letting people choose their default browser when installing Windows. So it opposes Microsoft just like NetScape.

@InProgress:

Those tests are old. They don't even test a BETA build of Firefox 3. Wait for it to be updated before drawing conclusions.

People hate Opera because of it's ad-based/pay-based approach. People hate IE because Microsoft has a history of screwing its consumers. People hate Safari (on PCs) because it's buggier than the first test release of FF3. So all we have left is Firefox, which is Open Source. Furthermore, it is built on a Free Software Engine. And people are getting really big about being able to control their software.

My personal opinion is that Opera is the suckiest browser in existence. Why? Adware sucks! And all the other choices are at least cost free. They have a history of sacrificing stability for performance. That doesn't cut it in my book. Also, did I mention the Adware?

Firefox OTOH has yet to let me down.

Actually, that's something I've always wondered about. I only tried out Safari for a couple of hours, and really didn't like it. iTunes annoys the hell out of me, it takes ages to respond to anything. By which I mean 4 or 5 seconds, but it feels like ages. I haven't used a Mac since it came with a built in 9" monochrome screen, and I've wondered whether these applications run significantly better on a Mac.
Yeah, Safari and iTunes run a lot better on a mac, well they do on my mac anyway.

I'm a Firefox man, myself, loving the shiny new Firefox 3. Safari has it's uses though, like taking any part of any webpage and putting in in your dashboard for easy access.

Firefox, fast, nice download manager, some good themes. Of which the one I'm using is the adorable 'Foxkeh' theme :3

I'm using Internet Explorer right now cause I only have my laptop and I don't want to bog it down with un-needed software... it's old...

but I'm currently building a nice new computer and plan to use Firefox's new browser when I get it up and running...

I started off with IE until Mozilla Firefox came around
ended up using that for many years until hearing about Opera

tested it out and now its the only browser i use

just loved all the addons and customisation options
almost everything the other browsers have Opera had first

as for the fastest web browser
testing IE would have just been a waste of my time
but when it comes to firefox and opera i couldnt see much of a difference (when considering a normal user)

when viewing some random page from a website that you havnt visited before its a toss of a coin as to which is faster
same went for cached ones
but if youve bothered to tweak with the settings then Opera wins both (cached hands down

note:
both were fresh instals of the latest releases
done on a 10KB/s capped internet (damn Telstra)
this is my testing and observations and itll be different for everyone

so dont post back whinging that my tests are inacurate, arnt done properly or that im full of shit (in the case of those in the Firefox fanclub), im well aware of these issues

Uhhhhhhhh
IE is on there, as far as I know you can't remove it from the Windows operating system, so any other browsers are in addition to IE and not instead of, right?

ummm so all the "extra goodies" internet explorer will install without even asking you, cause it's well known to ignore the "do not install" or "prompt" flag with software installs under internet explorer

It has actuly bean provem on more than one occasion that Safari is infact the fastest web browser and firefox in second.
possibly on a mac and only on a mac

and i do think that firefox and opera both beat it on multiple platforms, safari is win/mac only, the other 2 have linux ports

There is a way to remove IE from a Windows Install. There's a program called XPLite (http://www.litepc.com) that can strip out alot of elements of a Windows operating system, including so-called "core" components like IE. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who doesn't know what they're doing, but you can get rid of some of the bloat. Oh, and naturally, by removing IE you won't be able to use the Windows Update webpage, although the automatic updates should still work.

FireFox, because for one thing it has the coolest name/logo.
internet explorer? Isn't that just what it does? How original... And their logo is just a lower case "e" with something going around it, why? It must be because it starts with an "e" and the internet goes around the world. How fantastic and imaginative...>.>

Opera? I just imagine a fat lady singing in a viking costume, not a pretty sight, so I don't like it just for that mental image. It looks like they just took a random word and made it their name... kind of weird. And their logo is just a freaking "O" What the hell? they couldn't even be bothered to think of anything to represent their browser? Lazy bastards. Side note: Isn't an "O" already the symbol for about 200 other things?

Safari? I just imagine that "tally-ho" hunter guy from pink panther(the show) every time I here that word. I get what they were trying to say, "You can tranquillize elephants on our browser" Okay, not that, but that's all can think of, the name is too distracting and doesn't have enough to do with the project. And now their logo, a compass... What? I guess it's better than a letter... possibly... more strange than anything else, why a compass, you used to use them in safaris, I think? At the end of the day it's just really vague and loosely connected, much like the name of the browser.

But "FireFox" can you imagine anything that would make you go "WHAT FUCK WAS THAT?!" and then "THAT WAS THE COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!" than a giant fox on fire running around the planet. While in doesn't have anything to do with the internet, the logo does, and they are both awesome, and that is how I choose my browsers, on how cool they are.
As well as it is the best browser(that I have tried, which is really just an old version of IE and FireFox).

At work, I have IE because I can't change it.

At home, I have IE because I'm lazier than most forms of vegetation and some minerals.

How do you mean? Please elaborate on this comment!
Well, as far as I know, Safari is really only useable by Macs. I don't own a Mac. Even if I did, I'd probably try Firefox anyway. Every time I've ever tried using a Mac with Safari, I get Zerged by ads. Honestly, every time I hit a new page, I get at least 20 pop-ups. That's even worse than Internet Explorer.

FireFox, sometimes Safari or Opera but I've gotten used to FF's interface and it's got more themes to match the rest of my OS.
It's also got a mighty huge bunch of add-ons, some of them are actually useful as well.

And IE can bugger off, I don't feel like using a browser that's so bad that coders have started giving users of IE a page linking to FF instead of the site.

Firefox, since I first heard of it... a long long time ago. "several years?"
Besides. I couldn't make a very cool Globeicon for IE, "always looked really boring" but a burning fox globe? that was awesome. "still uses to this day"
