Both are about the same, they can look cool and usually have a story behind them. They also lose their appeal when you hit around the 'senior' age. They can also mysteriously appear after you had a hard night partying. But that didn't really answer the question did it...

Who cares what anyone else thinks, as long as you like what you have that's all that matters. I get plenty of crap and compliments for my tattoo, but at the end of the day, it's me who enjoys it. I don't shell out money on things I think other people will enjoy, that's for Xmas.

Personally I like scars better as they have a story and an explanation. Tatoos on the otherhand can often be explained by alcohol or peer pressure. Myself personally, as a 30 yr old man with children and a corporate job am glad i have no tatoos or piercings.

I have a Tattoo thats designed to cover my Scar when I put my fist through a window cause of a guy who was breaking in to my house.

Unique, designed by the wearer tattoos are body marking to show the world you are unique, you have come of age. In many cultures it shows you have become a man.

Tattoos from 'those books' are lame. Its a try hard tattoo.

Scars can show that your foolish, or that you survived a dangerous situation. A bullet hole Scar is a point of interest, a paper cut scar is lame..

Its all relative to culture, country and upbringing. to some its cool, to others its an excuse for something else. No less so than drinking, smoking, ear peircing, hair colouring, feet binding, taking drugs, being a vegan, a republican or black. We are all different, Accept the differences and look inside the soul before you judge someone..

I have quite alot of scars, but on prominent one is on my forehead. Nothing Harry Potter styled mind you, but I still think it looks pretty cool.

Actually. Tattoo's can have cool stories too. For instance, the tattoo of card spade is actually mandatory to get into one very prestigious Vegas poker game.

I'd go with scars. Scars result from painful experiences and bad ideas that are beyond your control. Tattoos are from painful experiences and bad ideas that you paid for. I may be biased because I don't have any tattoos but have two large permanent scars on my head and one on my arm. (cracking head on wall, hit in the face with machete, and a tumor)

Natural scars are cool because they often tell a story.
Getting tattoos or those tattoo scars is, in my opinion, stupid.

I think tattoos are like vandalising your body, who can say you'll appreciate the chosen image many years down the track? As for scar tattoos, that takes it to a whole 'nother level. By scar tattoos I mean the images created in flesh by deliberately causing scarring.

WARNING this link is horrifically graphic, but I think it's pretty self-explanatory why I despise scar tattoos: http://www.b0g.org/wsnm/articles/Scar+Tattoo

It all depends on the location the scar/tattoo sits on your body.

Personally I like tattoos because you can plan what everything is going to look like, you can't do that so much with scars, unless you do scarification which is crazy stuff.

Scars are not cool. Tatoos are kind of good looking, but can't be called cool either.
Tattoos are better because at least they look good.

Either could have an interesting story behind them. Honestly, I like both. Tattoos do have a slight edge since you get to choose those and where they go unlike scars. Scars are usually a result of stupidity and/or badassery or clumsiness.

I have both, because I am clumsy and I swim with golden retrievers. I've found that while I love my tattoo and wish I could show it off all the damn time or get one in a constantly visible place, society (particularly the employers) do not look especially kindly on tattoos. My scars, however, are never commented on, nor have I ever been told that they can't be showing for any reason.

Assuming that they didn't just get the tattoo(s) on impulse and put real thought into what it means to you, I have respect for people who get tattooed. Not for douche canoes who get something in Japanese (that for all they know says grapefruit or something that isn't what they wanted) or the name of someone who isn't family or dead (and can therefore never piss you off to the point of lasering off the tattoo of their name).

Tattoos rock, scars make you seem more interesting than you probably are... so both can be pretty damn cool.

And scars are hardcore, as long as they're not those gay emo self harm ones.
As for Wadders comment on self-harm scars... It's not your place to judge another person for your perception of what those scars mean or what happened to bring them to that point. Yes, it was "trendy" to have those for a few years, but not everyone with cutting or burning etc. scars did it or does it for attention or to be cool.
