Fallout 3 given the extremely over done deaths, the cannibal perk and the way in which you can horrifically desecrate the corpses of those you have slain.

My vote is between Manhunt and Fallout 3. Fallout 3 has over the top violence, but it also has some serious type violence. Go to Andale to see what I mean.

In my opinion, "that" mission isn't very violent. No more violent than the rest of the game really. Just controversial.
Violent isn't the right word. It impacted me enough to only walk through the airport and only kill the riot cops that shot at me.

Violent is not the correct word for the MW2 Airport scene, I in all honesty don't even see the controversy issue... GTA, Saint's Row, Fable, Overlord - Your capable of killing unarmed civilians in all of these games (and more). It's not new.
The only thing that hit me when I played that level was. "Yeah, Airport security sucks arse. Might look for places to dive next time I'm at an airport." And as someone who flies at least twice a year by plane, that was what hit me hardest, the possibility it could happen as a real atrocity.

Back on subject however, Manhunt. Close up's of pulling a bag over someones head, or stabbing them in the throat with a glass shard...

OT: Mortal Kombat. Put it all into perspective and you'll see what I mean.
But it was the only game that actually made me feel a bit bad when killing those civilians

I think a game in which there is a missoin to kill civilions beats a game where it's optional

Though I've never stopped playing a game because of its violence, the intimacy of the brutality found in Manhunt left me feeling dirty and despicable. Which means the game succeeded, I guess.

I stopped playing the Getaway because of the torture scene early in and the story, gameplay and characterisation sucked. I've since embraced the gore ridden nature of the games I escape into, like a warm bloody womb :)

The violence in Fallout games is legendary. Am I the only one who liked the Fallout 2 gritty violence / death animation a tad more than Fallout 3's? I mean Fallout 3's are very versatile unique, but I will never forget wiping out the Shark Club in New Reno for kicks. I had Butch as a companion and in an blood soaked display of visceral carnage he combat shotgunned 2 guys to death at once blowing their arm off, torso out, and head off in a radiant fountain of human flesh. Fallout 2 is an awesome game ^_^

I feel a little stupid, immature saying this but... well no, in fact I enjoy gory games to be honest.

OT: Any one play Shadow of Rome? one of the few games out there were you could cut some one's head off, then pick it up and beat his friend to death with it... or arm. You could cut people in half too... this game even kept score, yet it didn't receive any controversy.

One of my favourite PS2 games lol.

Being over 10 years old the graphics will be a bit dated but Carmageddon always holds a special place in my heart. Not quite as personal as the Manhunt/Postal series, but it takes the cake for pure body count. A new one built with todays technology could really be something.

Exactly... I'm not talking about how it looks with the graphics 'n' stuff. But the idea that you murder civilians because you're undercover and have to? That's fucking insane.
You DON'T have to do anything...
And you can even skip it all together.
So what's the problem?
Ehm... You murder civilians? Or at least helplessly watch whilst your 'teammates' do. I got the impression that you had to kill the civilians, so if you don't have to, it's probably just a lack of intelligent AI. Which again makes it insane that you're supposed to kill civilians.
It doesn't matter if you can skip the mission or not. It doesn't make the mission any less insane.
I take it you don't play GTA?

I'm sure it has been said already, But I have yet to play a game that made my jaw drop with sheer violence like the original Manhunt did.

I know I get a chubby good time every time I see the chainsaw in action in Gears of War 2, but I would call it far from being the most violent game out there.
thats because the characters in gears of war don't so much have organs so much as they're just styrophome soaked it beat juice.
I would have to with RE4 because you could actually blow people's heads off
