I think the obsession with zombies is caused by the ease of creating an atmosphere when we play games or watch movies with them in it when were alone, as well as the room for inovation still present for the multiplayer co-op games with them as well. I also think its because of the variouse hallmarks in the genre, Romeros day of the dead did somthing new with the genre that had never bin done befor, the movie explored the nature of a zombie and made it all the more creepy when theive bin more humanized, and 28 days later made it evident that zombies dont exactly always fit the same mold even though the creatures in the movie werent technically zombies, and one final thing is that I think is the whole concept of it all, your in a world where millions of people want nothing more but to eat you whole and theill do anything to do that while your alone or with the last few hopefully sane people on earth is just somthing that never gets old.

It was "What's the obsession with zombies", but for some reason it didn't look right to me...
So I changed it. And got it wrong.

I am always intrigued why people ask this question. I would think as a society we would have figured this out so long ago that even the fat kid of mentality has wheezed itself past the finish line and enjoying a post-near-heartattack twinkie.

That said, let me point it out for you. None of you/us are singular entities so stop acting like it is a fucking enigma for people to like something you don't. Also, seriously, check the search bar and read. I know it is quaint to feel special about your own thread but honestly, asking this question is like asking why people like a certain color.

*sigh* But I am here so I might as well answer your question. Zombies are a Rorschach, they are what you want them to be. They can be terrifying if used correctly, they can be hilarious, they can be both, and they can be any enemy you want to kill without guilt. They can be political commentary, they can be social allegory, they can be you, they can be me.

In short, zombies are a blank slate of unnatural. They give the religious doubt and remind atheists of exactly what it means to believe in nothing. While vampires can make you feel special, zombies just remind you of what everybody needs to remember. You're just meat and you're not special thus this could be you.

Hopefully that was helpful in some small way.

Here's a few reasons I'd love the zombie apocalypse:
1- Humanity dies.
2- I would get to bash in people's faces.
3- Impending doom is always nice to think about.
4- Fear of zombies spawns good movies and video games.
Couldn't say it better. My hatred for the human race and my obsession with death spawned my romance with the z-word

Gets the point across? Made me a bit dubious about the intelligence/relative sanity/keyboard of the OP at first, to be honest. My concerns were allayed by the actual content of the post, though.

OT: The appeal of zombies in games stems from the fact that they're slow, stupid, and can't attack from a distance. This means that killing them is different to gunning down generic soldiers. As for the ridiculous amount of "zombie survival" threads on the site, I guess it's just the teenage fascination with them, and it's a rather amusing way of discussing one's survival ability. It's the only survivable kind of apocalypse, which is probably why it's fun to talk about. Contrary to what Fallout 3 might want me to think, nuclear apocalypse is not particularly fun, apart from the majesty of the blastwave.

Personally, I find a zombie, in and of itself, to be boring, dull and not worth the two seconds of attention it would take to put a bullet in it's braincase.

Zombies don't start becoming fun until there's a lot of them.
A single lone zombie is pointless and dull, but if it's say:
You, six complete strangers and a few guns going up against a horde of zombies numbering somewhere between 3000 and 16 hyperbollilion then it starts to get fun.

A zombie-horde is fun not because it scares you. REAL fear is psychological, torturous.
This is isn't fear, it's terror. The knowledge that unless you spend every waking moment watching your every step, you could be dead before you even realize it. It's you going up against impossible odds, with the minute hope that you're not the only one.

So in summary: Zombies aren't cool, zombie-hordes are.

I think the main trait these things carry that make them one of THE MOST frightening foes you can encounter, is they are relentless. They won't stop. They don't care if you're behind a door, on the other side a fire, even though it will consume them, they will keep coming. On a building, they will pile up at the bottom so you have no way back. Their brain is the critical spot which makes killing them more difficult than just killing a human, or a lot of other creatures for that matter. And to me, it's as simple as that. They are a slow paced force that will stop at nothing.

But there's the problem: Zombies aren't scary. At all.

I laughed through Diary of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead and every other zombie movie I've ever seen.
We'll speak on this topic again after you've been cornered by a horde of worm-infested zombies (not those weakling L4D or Resident Evil zombies).

EDIT:

O.T. They're like Pirates, Ninja's and Monkeys, except you can't get rid of them.

I guess the zombie is the simplest enemy, theres no bad feelings about putting em down, and theyr ugly, but still, they are recognizable as humans, well, i find them fun and entertaining.....

Oh, and one of the best roleplaying experiences ive heard of, thats the pen and paper type, was about playing one self, in the city you live in. There was a zombie apocalypse, and the players had to survive in the city they know, whit the skills they got, batteling people they knowe. Sick and entertaining, and you have to consider if you can put a bullet through the head of somone you knew, even if theyve turned into a monster. )I dident play in this myself, but a friend of mine played in it and I was told quite a bit of what hapened. Im guessing a good GM would be nessesary to pull this off, but it is one of the things that made me find zombies facenating...

I didn't say MY fear of zombies spawned good movies and video games, nor did I say it spawned scary movies/video games. I know plenty of people that would cry for days if zombies were real; just because one doesn't find something scary doesn't mean that other people don't.
I guess a more appropriate 4th point would be 'Intrigue for zombies spawns good movies and video games.'

Well once there was a time when all we could do was talk about serial killers and slashers and there were about a hundred parodies of slasher films out and then that ship sailed, people got sick of it and now after hearing about it a hundred times... we are done with it.

Next came Velociraptor attacks, they were popular for a while too and people were all talking about them 'being able to open doors' and such. But that ship also sailed after the Jurrassic Park franchise drew to a close (a particulalry feeble close too I might add) and that was the last we heard of them.

After that, films like Dog Soldiers, the Howling, An American Werewolf in London, Ginger Snaps and a few others existed as evidence to the public's sudden facination with werewolves. Yes I personally think those are badass and for a while so did the rest of the world but that too, came to an end and now werewolves are no more.

Then came aliens which are possibly the only ones ever to last as more than just a fad. There have been over a hundred movies about aliens and while their popularity was once on the rise and now has lessened, there is no denying that aliens are still successful.

Not too long ago we were all pretty sick of hearing about Vampires, if you ask me the Blade Vampires and Bloodrayne vampires in particular were just over sexed and frankly unneapealling creatures and I kept wondering when people would stop using them, then along came Twilight which in turn made Vampirism seem whimpy.

And now finally we are at zombies, our obsession with the end of the world and the desire to kill each other endlessly. I think it's safe to say that zombies too shall eventually come to an end and I can only wonder what will replace them.
