I can't explain the obsession, but I can explain why they remain so prevalent: put simply, zombie AI is much easier to program than intelligent AI. So instead of making a military shooter, developers can make a zombie shooter for less programming costs, add more enemies, and sell more copies thanks to the word "zombie" in the name.

Sadly, the developers of Gran Turismo realized this too. In Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, you race against pathetic zombie drivers, BUT THERE ARE MORE OF THEM.

So bored of them. Pirates are worse though, I am bored senseless with people thinking that speaking, dressing or doing anything like a pirate is in any way fun, original or amusing. It's just something to do when you've run out of ideas.
*ahem*
They stop global warming.

Except in this case a ridiculous amount of people seem to have the same taste.
Because people have no originality. Something new will come along once we're totally bored of zombies.
Like pirates.

In my opinion at least i see zombies as awesome because the situation they cause to arise there is nothing more interesting even though morbid to watch than seeing the entire worlds population go batshit crazy because they are fighting something that frankly goes against all reasonable thinking and is most probably going to end the world for good so people will do anything to survive and what these actions are make zombie movies interesting and awesome to me because frankly when people are put into bad situations they do bad bad things like kill each other or worse.

So I dont see the zombies as the OMG coolest thing but what the zombies cause as really cool because i think most people have a morbid fascination of what if we were strained to far what would we do and how far would you go.

Because people have different tastes to you and are allowed their own opinions? Just a thought.

I personally think they're okay
Except in this case a ridiculous amount of people seem to have the same taste.

And "OMG ZOMBIES ARE AWESOME!!!" isn't really an opinion.
There will be some people who just see ZOMG ZOMBEHS and latch onto the fad.

But Zombies have universal appeal because they can be used in so many ways and are easy to instill fear into people and can even be used as comedic purposes so they are very likeable and accessable. Oh and they're good for hack and slash fun in like any medium.

Pick any one of those reasons you like, I'm going to go nom a brain.

I'm not a fan of zombies either... Think they're way to one-dimensional, just a cheap excuse to have something to shoot at.

why zombies? i suggest taking a look at the george romero films for the answer. its not the actual zombies however cool. its the actual social comentary you find in the films, how people react, do they keep their humanity or become worse than the zombies themselves.

for others there is the freedom to do anything you want without consequences, you live or die on your own talents, skills and abilities.

its also a very bleak genre cant trust anyone, paranoia (who has been bitten), the end of humanity, the legacy of what we leave behind, etc
Agreed on a few points; what really interests me in zombie films is how the characters and people react, what happened prior to the apocalypse, other than that they're just more squishy targets to get shot like in any action film.

They're ok but i´m more of a vampire man myself.

Twilight will not change my mind about vampires being the most badass thing ever.In my opinion of course.
they sparkle and leap around in the woods, they're fairies.
vampires are secretive undead blood drinkers that prowl around at night.

They're cannon fodder, they're as human as can be without any reason to keep you from killing them, and quite a few reason TO kill them.

If you want a more robust answer, go watch Movie Bob's ZombieLand review starting at 1:12

I know for myself that at the end of the day there's at least one person whom I would love to smother with a cinderblock.

I really don't care about zombies whatever makes a game fun and lets me kill or re-kill something I am fine with.

The last couple years, the internet has had a habit of latching onto things I've loved and doing it to death. I've had a fascination for pirates since I was really really young, playing "The Ancient Art of War at Sea" on my old monochrome XT. Suddenly, they became the big internet sensation (not to mention mainstream sensation as well, thanks to the PoC movies, which I did actually enjoy, myself).

And then, for years and years I've loved zombies, because as an aspiring filmmaker, the zombie medium is a wonderful premise that gives you a "carte blanche" for thinking up ways to kill things bloodily and creatively. Even as a viewer, the zombie genre inherently contains a lot of elements to play with that can be fun or scary or just awesome. But now everything is zombies. Everywhere I turn, something is zombies. Locally, we have a rather large annual event called "The Zombie Walk," where people dress up as zombies and trudge down the street. Yes, that is awesome, and I'm glad it exists, but I'm just getting a bit over-saturated with everything zombie.

eh, They're really no different from any other enemy, and they're so dumb looking that I can't take them seriously. Only zombie game I've liked is dead rising, because it goes about the whole zombie thing in such an over the top and intentionally corny manner that it makes the zombie more of a satirical enemy than a realistic threat. Plus it was a really fun game in general.

Well, from a psychologist's standpoint, we love zombies because we hate ourselves. Killing the undead gives us a common enemy that deep down inside we loathe simply because they are us. Fortunately, I'm not a psychologist, so I don't buy into that idea. I obsess over zombies becuase it gives me something constructive to do. I have to prepare my apocalypse shed, build a Mad Max car, buy provisions from the Army/Navy surplus store, get drunk with my friends and discuss survival plans, and try to convince my psychologist and chain of command that I am not insane, merely practical.

Zombies are awesome because they were some of the first enemies we could blow up into tiny, gorey bits -IN FULL 3D- without somebody from the media going "OMG~ VIOLANCE IN SKOOLZ."

Oh yeah, plus, what isn't cool about being neither dead, nor alive? Zombies just have that dark, macabre charm. Like many other things, such as spikes, shadows, torches, skulls, coffins, blood, southern crosses, vampires, and dark corridors.

Last, but not least, they serve as a reminder of our own mortality. Truly, there are few things more scary than to be affected or assimilated into some sort of horde. It's why horror movies and games usually have something to do with that, because it's just plain scary. You can see a zombie in, say, Resident Evil and there should be more going through your head than just "OMG DON'T EAT ME." You should also be getting "I DON'T WANNA' BE ONE OF THOSE THINGS!" You are able to see your own future in the zombie.

And that is why zombies are awesome.

I love seeing how people survive in zombie movies. It's one of them things that interest me.

I love zombie games because of the same reason, how would I survive?

Also, with all the advancements in science, the concept of the living dead is the most realistic.

(Werewolves are kickass)
