escort missions because the main reason you die is because the morron has to go get a bullet to it's head.

Stealth I don't mind, but escort missions are annoying as hell because the AI are always idiots... and the forth option "I only play FPS"... umm... that makes no sense because FPS games have both stealth and escort missions...

I'd say that on a general scale, escorts are worse.

Forced stealth can be epic in its shite-ness, but sometimes, it works.
Escorts on the other hand, practically entail hand-holding and irritation.

Then you have ICO, which was an escort game, and was absolutely magical.

NPC's generally have wonky AI, anytime you're doing a damn escort mission it seems 1000 times worse then normal. They don't take cover, they don't fire back, they walk into the fray and get killed! EVERY TIME! You have to be a one man army even if it's a mission where you have to try to remain under the radar. I'll take forced stealth sections any day of the week over escort missions.

Escort Missions, rrrrrrr!
And that about sums it up to be honest.

I would enjoy them alot more if the bloke I am protecting had any common sense and could distinguish between cover from view and cover from fire. A bush isnt cover. AAAAAAAAAAND you can
give commands to your guy, you cant tell him to stay back or move up.

Forced stealth, certainly.

Escorts, I can do, I can do them fine, but forced stealth is just horrible. Timesplitters 2, Neotokyo is an example. That level is torture.

What I like is games like Metro 2033. They have sections that would be best completed by stealth, but it is possible to run and gun it. Choices, my boy, choices.
i'd follow what you've reasoned. and you're right, think of those gamers who just want to be on killing sprees... they can't take it on stealth missions!

Escort missions. Depending on what you are escortion though. They are fun when you escort tanks or someone who can actually take care of themselves.

Escort missions. Especially when the character you're trying to escort is charging in front of its allies fire....I'm looking at you captain Keyes...

Oh god, why did you have to bring that up, I thought I had finally removed that memory from my mind forever. I NEVER made it past that, in the end I think I resorted to cheats or something, it was just horrendous.
O.T. I agree with Furb, escorts are bad, but stealth, especially really out of place stealth, is worse.

Forced Stealth by FAR!
Games like Wind Waker (hell, even OoT), Rainbow Six (1-3, not the recent ones), Red Faction, No One Lives Forever, Jedi Knight II all have HORRIBLE forced stealth sections. I'd get stuck on them the longest because most of the time the game would punish you horribly for being seen.

I don't know what games the rest of you have been playing because only a few rare instances have escorting sucked. I can only think of 2 times off the top of my head (as the list above was too) Doom 3 with the flashlight gun bot, and the R4 droid in the JKII. The stealth section was WAY worse for me in JKII though.
Words stolen from my mouth... Bah everyone reads my mind these days!

I utterly DESPISE escort missions, the dumbass AI walking into the line of fire, Standing around like an idiot, cant fight worth a damn and whining like a *****, and on top of that if they get so much as a scraped elbow or stubbed toe, you have to start over (ok not entirely true, if the AI has a weapon and can use it, plus has basic common sense/competence then its not so bad) But as for Stealth, the missions where "you get seen you lose" do kinda get annoying, but I tend to quite stealthy in games, so I probably would have done that mission stealthy anyways.

With a dumb AI in games I would go with escort missions. Smart AI makes for challenging stealth missions, and is a double edged sword for escort missions. Sure, the person your protecting might have more brains, but so are the people trying to kill you. At least with stealth, smart AI makes it only a better and more nail biting experience.

Escort missions because if someone was escorting me to safety irl, I wouldn't just throw myself in harm's way to challenge their ability.

Forced Escorts Definetly!!!1

At least stealth can be refreshing. I hate having to escort some stupid through a hail of bullets that I could deal with on my own, but that I must try multiple times because i must watch the ass of some know-nothing bint.

Both can be game breakingly annoying, but escorts tend to be consistantly worse. I understand the point of them, and that if whatever your protecting is too capable of survival, it becomes too easy... BUT oftentimes it becomes frustrating because what your escorting is not just "not too capable" but actively suicidal.

What's more, these escort missions are usually designed to be a test of a player's quick reaction abillity (let's be honest) which is why they are set up that way. I understand why a lot of them work the way they do, but when you have an escortee who insists on continueing down their path when you want to sit down to recover health (and common sense dictates you should be able to) it's kind of ridiculous.

Of course forced stealth sequences can be just as annoying when the AI is made to be nearly psychic, or if it's being handled as an adventure game in a game that was otherwise not set up that way... basically having to guess what the developers decided you were supposed to do, rather than simply avoid whatever your up against... any wrong desician being a misstep.

I look towards "Siren: Blood Curse" as an example of "Adventure game stealth sections" albiet they were pretty good in that game, since it was pretty much an adventure game masquerading as Survival Horror. :p
