Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines. It's a bit later than the rest of them, but it's so awesome I'm fairly certain that it can go back a few years at will, just to be put in the lineup.
I'd think it's disqualified. Bloodlines is pretty clearly in the action RPG category, and as a game the balance is non-existent, while the actual gameplay is pretty much crap. Especially the combat, where you can shoot a normal human in the face, he'll flinch, and then start punching you. It suffers from what I like to call "Action RPG wet cardboard syndrome" - where everything you interact with feels like it's made out of wet cardboard. The guns, the bullets, the knives, the enemies, everything.

But the setting's fantastic. The kind of moral choices in the game go far beyond Good and Evil karma - you affect characters' lives. If Troika games had more time and resources, I'm sure Bloodlines would have been one of the greatest games of all time. [http://imaletyoufinish.com/] If anything, it's got me interested in White Wolf's World of Darkness pen and paper games, and for that, it deserves respect.

It also gets bonus points for going all Tyler Durden.

I'm going to give a shoutout to Front Mission, though it's in Strategy RPG territory.

Definitely a hard tie between Diablo and Chrono Trigger. Diablo for the brute awesomeness and content of the game and Chrono Trigger for epic nostalgia factor.

You made a poll of classic RPG's and you don't know what Chrono Trigger is? That's like making a poll of classic rock bands and not knowing what Led Zeppelin is.

Because judging by your list of classic games, and by your listed age, Chrono Trigger was not on your radar upon release (but you were just a baby). It seems that you are a more PC RPG oriented kind of guy. Nothing wrong with that, it's just the way the cookie crumbled.

It's also why you're idea of classic RPG and mine are so different. For me, classic RPG is anything pre-FFVII basically. IMO, FFVII is the gateway to the modern RPG. But, I was also born 17 years before you.
Well, its just those are my ideas of classic RPG's especially since I didnt start to like console RPG's until 360/Ps3.

Out of those, it has to be Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. I those games ate up a lot of my time.
Agreed. None of the other games come close to them.
