I personally find the culture espoused by most rap to be abhorrent, and honestly I find heavily rhythm based music to be mediocre and best and headache-inducingly awful at worst. So no, I do not generally like rap.

And once again we descend into a valley of misinformation. RAP IS NOT A GENRE OF MUSIC! Rapping is a lyricism technique that is heavily associated with Hip-Hop. The meaning of the word "Rap" has been somewhat misconstrued and has come to mean a certain Hip-Hop sound. In it's current context it is not a separate genre of music. And before you start complaining take a look at the history of Hip-Hop. <Rants about how mainstream American Hip-Hop has made it harder for the rest to be recognised when they do something different> Curse Ov Dialect, The Herd, Rosetta Stoned, Fort Knox Five, and Ozi Battler FTW.

I'm done.

It contributes to continued racism by emphasizing the worst stereotypes of the groups it represents, it's aesthetically unpleasant, it relies on "samples" rather than originality, and to steal a line from Ren and Stimpy, "No sir, I don't like it."
Wow.. /applaud

Basically said everything I intended to, just more eloquently.

Only thing I can add is that is based in anti melodic and extremely repetitive musical theory. From a musical standpoint it is basically reducing the music down to the lowest common denominator.
Oh yeah?

No strengthening of stereotypes there just really nice chill music :)

and what's wrong with anti-melodic?
Dissonance is an amazing technique if used properly.
What gives you the right to say that it is the lowest common denominator?

it has it's gems in general, it is not my favourite thing to listen to.

I hate country even more. having to listen to it at my past job because the manager freaking adores it and it was always depressing to me.

I like the odd artist, like Kanye West, Eminem and B.O.B, a few of their songs actually mean something, which usually wins my respect when it comes to musicians.
Artists that are like, "Yo dawg, move out the way *****, I slap some hoes" don't deserve the fame they get.

Up until last week, I'd have called it garbage. Last Friday, though, as I was preparing for my grad-school class the following day, I realized that despite the obnoxious sounds that anger me beyond belief, the point is intended to the same effect as the rock music I eat up. Many of the topics are the same, the emotion is still there, and the only real difference seems to be the dialect and word choice.

Like several others said, I like the older and underground stuff better than the current mainstream crap. I hate when people say "It's not music!" just because they don't like it. You don't have to like it, but don't make ignorant blanket statements based on what's on the radio and MTV. If I said rock was nothing but a bunch of emo, label-obsessed screamers and cutters, quite a few people here would be butthurt.

Really? Okeydoke, so by that logic anyone can do it?

Here's a gorgeous beat, have a go. Surely if it requires no talent, you can "just make rhymes and toss foulness into it"?
Tell you what. You can have... 2 weeks to record? Should be more than enough. Throw something up. Unless it's a little more complex than you originally thought?

Oh, and just to make it easier, you don't have to do the whole thing. 0:16 - 1:03 is 16 bars, the average length of a verse. Subject matter is your call.

Here's hoping you don't disappoint, I'm looking forward to hearing this...

I've said it before in similar threads, the majority of Escapist's knowledge on Hip Hop doesn't go beyond what's in the public eye, and as such they just assume all rap is like the shit they hear because they're too ignorant and lazy to look beyond what they are shown. There's a huge difference between mainstream and underground Hip hop, so much so that underground rappers take the piss out of mainstream rappers for sucking. I fully appreciate if people, after looking beyond the commercialised shit, still don't like Hip Hop because it's not their thing. What I hate though are the cunts that either get their opinions from Google, or base their opinion on the genre entirely on what is on TV, which is a fucking fraction of the genre in total.

It's like me going into a metal threads and saying "all metal is about devil and killing people". I don't like metal for other reasons, but Escapist members seem to feel the need to voice their distaste of Hip Hop and act like they're above it. It's funny that through expressing these opinions though they're ignorance shines right the fuck through.

If I were to say underground Hip Hop is modern poetry, I'd not only sound pretentious but I'd probably shoot down the million arguments from idiots that claim it's all about the same subject. To quote Scroobius Pip; "thou shalt remember that guns, bitches and bling were never part of the four elements, and never will be." To prove my point I'll post a Sage Francis song, who (oh my fucking Gaawwd) is white, something for all the morons who claim "there are no good white rappers" to think about.

<youtube=G4vVH3hBfs4>

I'm gonna quote myself and say this again, if you're opinion on Rap and Hip Hop doesn't go beyond Kanye West, shut the fuck up.

I love Rap and Hip Hop, I hate the ignorant masses.

Ok, I like to get down to specifics when it comes to Rap/Hip-hop.

I hate gangster rap. With a passion. Illiterate douchebags just making a trend for the kids and/or stupid people.

I don't mind the "nicer" stuff though. The ones where lyrics have meaning. Not just shit, fuck, bang bang, kill that n*gger... you get the point. Also, death to auto-tune!
