I don't like it at all, but I'm not going to say it's not music or anything. People have different tastes.

I will say I hate the majority of modern rap lyrics and videos though.

Really? Okeydoke, so by that logic anyone can do it?

Here's a gorgeous beat, have a go. Surely if it requires no talent, you can "just make rhymes and toss foulness into it"?
Tell you what. You can have... 2 weeks to record? Should be more than enough. Throw something up. Unless it's a little more complex than you originally thought?

Oh, and just to make it easier, you don't have to do the whole thing. 0:16 - 1:03 is 16 bars, the average length of a verse. Subject matter is your call.

Here's hoping you don't disappoint, I'm looking forward to hearing this...
Settle down mate. I'm pretty sure he's talking about the more "gangster rap" bullshit that's popped out by anyone with a badly spelled name.

I love Flying Lotus (listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU9YRGLPDQ8), he is the only hip hop artist i listen to. Gil scott-Heron (listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKQd_Ixm-jQ) is more spoken word than rap, but i love him as well. That is all.

I dislike it, but I approve of the motives of alternative hip hop / rap (it purposefully steers clear of the "gangsta" culture).

Non-alternative, "gangsta" hip hop / rap however, I despise greatly, and would remove it if I could. Shooting hos and getting money isn't something to particularly aspire to. The former for obvious reasons (you can get arrested for that shit yo!), and the latter because, sure, money is good to do stuff, but it's unhealthy for you if you become obsessed with it (well, like everything, but it's seriously all my brother cares about, and that's inhibiting).

Most of it is complete shit, just some guy wearing oversized clothes 'rapping' about the usual gangs money guns sex woman stuff. And the fanbase consists of 10 year olds also wearing oversized clothes. Hip Hop is better than rap but it isnt that great either.

I guess there are some rappers who at least have more diversity in their lyrics than the regular ones, but still, theres nothing else than the rapping, just some lame background beat, some have maybe a drummer on their live performances but thats it.

I don't care what you think he's talking about, what he meant to say or how he meant to say it. I'm calling him out on a statement that he made. I don't think he can back that statement up, though I'm more than happy to find out.

Hate to be picky, but technically Gangsta is alternate. Rap such as Lupe Fiasco, Hilltop Hoods, Akala and similar artists are known as "conscious" rap. In the same way that there's very little "non-alternate" metal (most are defined as black-metal, death-metal, shock-metal, power-metal, the prefix denotes a subset), there is very little "non-alternative" rap. Nerdcore, Grimecore, Dub, Conscious, Stoner, Gangsta, they're all subsets. If you want to go back to "true" rap, you'd be looking at reggae toasting.
Sounds a little different to Gangsta, huh? :p

Part of my frustration towards rap/hip hop comes from the people who listen to it. Why do fans of this genre like to turn up the volume (or bass) really fucking loud and roll down their car windows? Hey assholes, not everyone likes to listen to the same shit as you! Knock it off!

It's really grown on me as a genre over the past year, and now I love it. For me, Doom is lyrically brilliant and hilarious, the guy takes rapping to another level. Mos Def and Talib Kweli walk the line with gangsta rap sometimes, but mostly they are very talented and have interesting viewpoints.

If you do not like rap music just because it's rap music. CHECK. OUT. SHAD. Do it. The dude's music is the antithesis of gangsta rap. If you don't want to get into rap, fine. Just listen to "The Old Prince Still Lives At Home." and leave it at that. It's brilliant.

Finally, if you're a typical geek who doesn't really know much about rap, try Adam WarRock.

I'm pretty sure Cee-Lo's from the south. I mean, I guess Gnarls Barkley isn't specifically southern rap, but still.

Is it music? It's...something. It's definitely something at least in the vicinity of music. It's not my cup of tea but I still prefer it over Country and many other things. The gangsta rap scene bothers me though. There's nothing glamorous about pointless violence, objectifying women and wearing twelve pounds of jewelry around your neck. I realize that might be stepping on some cultural lines, and if it offends you, I'm sorry, but I don't see how that message helps anyone.

In general I do not enjoy listening to it. However it's a matter of taste, so it doesn't bother me as long as it's not forced onto me.

It contributes to continued racism by emphasizing the worst stereotypes of the groups it represents, it's aesthetically unpleasant, it relies on "samples" rather than originality, and to steal a line from Ren and Stimpy, "No sir, I don't like it."
I think that's an overly simplistic view of things. True, to get on MTV you have to partake in the minstrel show, but there's a lot that doesn't. Rap takes a lot of forms, so I'm not sure you can really find it all aesthetically unpleasant, though maybe you do.

Finally, while more and more rappers have actual musicians and don't run samples, it shouldn't matter. Creativity is not just the element of writing the notes.

I don't care for most rap or hip hop, but if its your thing that's cool. Just please stop blaring it at 120 decibels down the road as you drive; it does not make you cooler you whitebread poser. For me it's heavy metal or classic, it's an odd combo but seems to work for me.
It's not really odd man, considering Metal as a genre is most closely linked to classical, musically.

OT: It's not my thing at all but I can respect others tastes. For me, the big thing is Electronica at the moment.

I'm not a fan of rap or hip-hop, to be honest. However, I'm happy to ackowledge that it is music, for the most part. Also, their are a few bits and pieces I don't mind listening to, although I wouldn't listen to out of choice - say, for example, Cypress Hill. I don't mind them, but I wouldn't listen out of choice.

I'm not too fond of it, it's not as 'personal' as the kind of music I listen to. There's just a lack of decent rap and hip hop for it to be an attractive genre in my ears, contra for example bands like Porcupine Tree, which is filled to the width with deep lyrics and amazing instrumental performances. I just don't like the gangsta stuff going on, it's stupid.

There's a few good rappers though, Edo G being one of the better ones.
