I know I am beating a dead horse here, but the Final Fantasy series will end when one thing happens, and not a moment sooner: it will end when the franchise stops making money. It's what I like to call the Survivor effect. If something makes insane amounts of money, people will continue to produce things that are similar to it. Not that I'm bashing the series, however. FF3, for the original GameBoy was probably the first game I ever played.

I do have to admit, however, that I kind of am looking forward to Final Fantasy XXX...

As long as it makes money, they won't stop. Even if Square Enix gets tried of them and drops the series, another developer will come along and snatch it up and attempt a cash grab.

When it reaches the 30th horrible game. Note: I really think every FF is horrible. Turn based combat isn't for everyone.
Have you played every FF? No? well then you can't make your comment now can you.
As I have said. Turn based combat isn't for everyone and especially isn't for me.

Long as the games are GOOD (not like XII turned out to be), then I hope they don't stop.

Final Fantasy XXX... would that involve only female characters?

Actually, Turn-based combat was lost after FFX-2. XII was terrible, but it was real-time combat.

When the Earth explodes into a billion pieces of molten rock!

Seriously though, they'll stop when the interest goes away, which I can't really perceive happening.

I can see it going to at LEAST Final Fantasy 16, and I would say that in my lifetime I would see a FF18. After FF20...... I just can't see it - FF20 is at least another 2 decades away, and I'm not sure Square Enix would even exist then.

There's only 3 things that can kill the Final Fantasy series

1) Square Enix folds - which it might. Or it might get taken over and the new owners might jettison the series if they don't think it will be profitable

2) A major FF game fails to make a profit - that would be the death of the series right there and then. But given how large the fan base is, that's quite unlikely.

3) Another Square Enix Series takes over. Square Enix are in an experimental mood - they've released quite a few different games based on FF, and quite a few games not based on FF. If they create an IP that's even more profitable, then they'll probably drop the FF series.

I don't care when it stops. I love the FF series. Like Onmi said back on page 1, they are NOT sequels! There has only ever been one FF sequel which was FFX-2.

They are good games. They make money. Why would they stop?

I bet that they will stop the official games at around XVII. At what number do you think they will stop. It'd be weird i the made the 30'th game, imagine the controversy. Final Fantasy XXX.
There already are over 30 games in the franchise.

The answer to the question is "when people stop buying them". And considering how long the series has gone on, and will probably go on further, it will keep selling to new audiences. The fact that the story is different (while similar) in different worlds is enough to make each game fresh enough to be worth a look if you are a fan of the genre.

This actually brings up an intresting point that the FF series is complained about by people who have either played 1 or none. Because they aren't Sequels in the sense they are related to each other at all. They are games with their own worlds, plots, characters, myth etc. They could easilly come up with a new name every game and it would still be the same thing, Final Fantasy just makes damn sure it brings in the customers.
True, there is no continuity in the games (Barring FF X-2) but there are some common themes.

1) The Inclusion of Chocobos
2) Greater SOruces of Power that can be summoned or tapped into for Aid, may or may not bear similar names
3) Token Cid character, usually in a position regarding Technology or piloting.
4) Re-occurence of certain Spells (Fire1-->Fire2--->Fire3, or Fire->Fira->Firaga->Firaja/Firagun)
5) An Anthropomorphic race.

If you think about, shouldn't the first game be the "final" one?
It was-then it became an unexpected smashing success.
Those similarities are good because it means that you don't have to re-learn the basic stuff. The inclusion of token characters are a mixture of tributes (eg. Wedge & Biggs) and a bit of tradition (eg. Cid, Chocobos). I like the re-occurence of spells like Fire, Fira, Frigara... there is no point re-inventing the wheel.
Name one RPG that does not include greater powers in one form or another. They all have it. In FF they again use a bit of tribute/tradition for these 'summons'.
