The Iron Maiden song To Tame a Land, which is based on the book.
You know, they wanted to call the song "dune", but Herbert was a pretentious dick and wouldn't let them because he didn't like heavy metal.

You know, even though the books are great, they show Herbert himself to be extremely old-fashioned. The role he makes women play in the novel is a very backwards view, as if they should be entertainments and servants, and making the Baron Harkonnen a homosexual paedophile shows just where he stood in regards to gays.

Oh yeah that probably why Heretic of Dune and forwards it's pretty much the reverend mothers who rule the galaxie
Yeah, but remember that absolutely nobody in the whole galaxy trusted the Bene Gesserit? Who were the only all-female group with any power?

Honestly what comes to my mind is a set of *mostly* boring books, a confusing movie with some really bad sequels, and a fanbase that's easily shocked by the notion someone out there doesn't care for Dune as much as they do.

The subtlety is over my head, or I just don't get it. Or maybe Dune is just boring as f-.

That said I have some relatives who adore Dune, and I don't particularly hate the series. If the first movie is on the TV, I'm not changing the channel. Internal substance aside, the books and movie take themselves very seriously it seems, and I can respect that.

I think of the books, which is odd because I never read those books. I did see one of the movies years ago, but I think I was too young back then to understand what the hell was going on. All I remember is that it was really long and there was a big huge worm in a desert or something.

The original series by Frank Herbert. Never played the games or saw the movie. And then at the very end I think of the newer series by Brian and Kevin.

I have an injoke with my friend. When playing halo3 rocket race on the sandtrap map we shout "Its on the Dunes! GARY!"
we have no idea why we do this.

Dune sounds like Doon.
It reminded me of the Tediz from Conker: Live And Reloaded.

One of the best sci fi books ever. It combines religion, mysticism, economy, politics, enlightenment in a crazy 10000 years future. good stuff. star wars and star trek seem stupid compared to it, and i like those universes too. In a way, like Arthur C Clark said, Dune is to sci fi, what lord of the rings is to fantasy.

Man no way, in the last set of books, the real heroes all along were always the Bene Gesserit who wanted to develop the true physical and mental potential of mankind.

Frank Herbert, six books, all of them good, some brilliant. Poor Duncan, how many times does he have to die before they let him rest?

Love it.

But man those books are some of my all time favorites, but after the 3rd one it gets SO convoluted.

I think of the cover of not sure which Dune book but the one with the worms on it with guys riding them.
Also of course dune 2, one of the 1st RTS games ever made and a fucking fantastic one at that.
I think they invented mineral collection too, even though CnC likes to try to steal that title :p

Played all the games, read the first three books, and watched both miniseries and movie. Needless to say, I king of love the series

The books is what I think of. The David Lynch film could have been great in its own right, the script shifts from the book too much to be classed the same work, but he wasn't allowed to finish it as he wanted. The producer Dino de Laurentiis wanted something more like star wars or Flash Gordon. If Lynch he got his way we would have perhaps the first space gothic film ever.
