Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, definitely. It's way more balanced than Halo 3's multiplayer, there's a nifty levelling system that increases replay value, and it's intense and fun at the same time.
for me, i never played anything but halo on a friends guest account but battlefield 2142 looked pretty good on my mates computer.
Unreal Tournament was a pretty darn good game. I loved a lot of the weaponry, and game types, and it still somewhat withstands the test of time.
I see no mention of QUAKE the best and most moddable online shooter ever.
You can't talk about legendary shooters without talking about QUAKE because QUAKE was one of the first and QUAKE is still hugely popular and one of the most modded games in history.
QUAKE gets about everything right, it's simple, balanced, fast and violent.

Probably, but not as many as play QUAKE.

Maybe COD2 or UO, but not WaW or COD4, those are just spray spray spray with all the extremely low recoil guns like the RPD or the no recoil 'I win gun' the M16, get killed by random frag, spawn, spam three frags or grenade launcher over the map, get a kill streak, camp so you can get a helicopter, get killed by martydom, or someone with Juggernaut, helicopter goes and gets loads of cheap kills for you, repeat process. The whole game is based on cheap kills and made for the ADD masses, hence why it's full of kids.
I can't belive COD is beating counterstrike. Just goes to show who's being playing online games for a while and who started playing with the 360/ps3.

You've never played Team Fortress 2, eh? Well how about you go out and buy the game, lock yourself in a room with a minifridge and a bag of chips, and play the best goddamn online shooter ever made. I mentioned the minifridge and chips because once you start playing for the first time, you never ever want to get off. Also, they've been through like 50 DLCs when it first came out, so you've got a lot of catching up to do.gagalloogie said:

i havent played TF2, but ill put it #4 on the list because of what i hear about it
TF2 to me always seemed like the most balanced shooter that I've ever played. Any time I get killed I usually fell like it was through player skill (except the pyro). There are no super powered weapons, just ones that work in different situations. And it's fun and funny at the same time. It's easily my favourite.
COD4. I used to love battlefield 1942 on PC when it came out years ago, and as much as I'd like to play the newer battlefield titles on xbox 360, being restricted to American servers makes me wanna tear my eyes out.
