Poll: Which legendary online shooter is best?

BF2 & BF2142 would be the best shooters ever made if it wasn't for the buggy pile of shite that is Punkbuster kicking people every three seconds for init failiures and handshake failiures; they are literally the only reasons I don't thay BF2/2142 anymore.

Also Titan mode is so sick.

UT3 ruined the series, CSS is meh and L4D doesn't really count as an "online competetive shooter". I mean, you fight against ZOMBIES. Sure there is Versus, but most of the enemies (95%) are AI monsters.

At LAST, someone brings up Tribes! Tribes 2 was one of the most amusing games I've played. It's probably one of the few games where team play means you live longer and win. Also, Katabatic and Grav Cycles (if we're talking about Tribes 2).

The only other one I've played is Planetside (an MMO!) and TF2. Which is fairly awesome. When you're doing well, you feel invincible.

The UT series was wonderful. Not a big fan of UT3, mostly because they nerfed my Flak Cannon and boosted the Biorifle, and then made the game Darker and Edgier, so I can barely see where I'm going. But UT2k4, with it's sheer lack of explanation for anything ("Go kill things. Respawn, then do it again") was wonderful. Colourful levels, gobsmacking weapons, and bots that could at times be far too intelligent.

I've not played much of Quake 3 Arena, except against my brother. But it was fun. Railgun to the face... Bliss.

Oh, and CoD4 is great fun, especially when you're in a tiny level and everyone's using shotguns. Or, in my case, when the only weapon you use is the secondary bazooka. At point-blank range. Hearing the screams from across the room made my day.

CoD4 is a very close runner-up, but nothing can match the magic that was Halo 2.

Frontlines Fuel of War is one of my all time favs
Quake 1 was amazing online(if it counts as it was very much singleplayer)
Unreal Tournament series is good
CoD is also a huge favorite of mine(any of them, esp 2 tho)
Medal of Honour AA was really good back in the day

I don't think you can put Frontline Fuels of war on this list. It never seemed to reached legendary status.
You are missing a lot of the Old school FPS that made the genera what it is today, as many have told you before.
OT: Battlefield series.

Well I don't think Battlefield is old school. It's gaming style is quite modern further more the battlefield series isn't that old really. Don't get me wrong it most certainly helped shape the online FPS and are hugely popular games, but i wouldn't say old school. Old school online FPS IMHO would be Doom/Quake/UT/Counter-Strike etc

You've left out a lot of great games to be honest, so i have selected other.
Overall i'd say Quake 3/UT should get the crown as not only did they set the standard for most of the FPS games we play now, but most FPS are based off either series engine line.

i know a lot of people hate halo but its still one of the biggest shooters and more people play that than any other game on xbox than any other (over 200,000 at a time and millions per day)

also i think cod4 is the best on-line shooter but i think halo at least deserves to be in the poll
i also like cod 5, far cry 2, bfbc, bf1943, TF2 ,COJ:BIB and the conduct on-line as well
i don't count left 4 dead as its not a team based shooter but that's good (except when one team are zombies)

You whipper-snappers have no idea what the best is!!! With your CODs and TF2s.... Best FPS ever is the one that provided the most perfect example of console FPS, Goldeneye for the N64. Period. End of story.

Guns? Awesome. Mutliplayer? Awesome. James Bond? Always awesome. Unlockable content? Awesome. I could go on...

Best level in that whole game is the Moonraker level where you have to fight Jaws (if you're thinking shark right now, you're probably not legally able to drink), and once you beat him, you get dual M-16s and nothing is as satisfying as running up on a guard and emptying two clips into their face.

Complain about graphics if you must, but remember this was TWO consoles ago. Besides, graphically it works because most of your approach will involve recon and the NPCs look brilliant from a distance. Up close, they look like the best the N64 could offer (two consoles ago).

If you haven't played Goldeneye, play it, and then measure it to the rest. And quit climbing on my fence, ya damn kids!!!
