You've missed out so many.

Frontlines Fuel of War is one of my all time favs
Quake 1 was amazing online(if it counts as it was very much singleplayer)
Unreal Tournament series is good
CoD is also a huge favorite of mine(any of them, esp 2 tho)
Medal of Honour AA was really good back in the day
I don't think you can put Frontline Fuels of war on this list. It never seemed to reached legendary status.
You are missing a lot of the Old school FPS that made the genera what it is today, as many have told you before.
OT: Battlefield series.
Oh sorry thought this was opinions.

Well I don't think Battlefield is old school. It's gaming style is quite modern further more the battlefield series isn't that old really. Don't get me wrong it most certainly helped shape the online FPS and are hugely popular games, but i wouldn't say old school. Old school online FPS IMHO would be Doom/Quake/UT/Counter-Strike etc
Had my info wrong I thought 1942 came out prior to 2000, so yeah its not that old.

TF2. I feel that it has a very good balance of mechanics that lets it be easily picked up, but challenging to master, and the continuing support for the game keeps things fun.

You can't really count L4D for me it is CoD2 as that was my first proper online shooter(yes I am kinda new) but Quake and TF2 are also great.

Personally I dont like Counter Strike games at all because you can't aim down the sight with every gun(yes this a big thing for me) and there is really only 1 main game type.

I vote Unreal Tournament. Instagib, that is.

Nondeathmatch, it's Left 4 Dead, hands down.

Out of your options, BF1942.

Out of other games, there are much, much better ones, but probably not legendary.

Like Warsow.

As much as it may pain a number, i'm sure "Halo" has a slot there.. in fact... a number of fps games are missing.

Meh.. TF2. Nothing quite beats the mayhem and insanity of it.

I said COD, but then I read Mezzamine's comment...shit
Same for me. When I saw the question my xbox popped into my had so it was going to be CoD 4. If the question was directed only at PC's then It would have to be TF2 because the Xbox 360's version of that game is a fail.

lol talking about legendary online shooters and not mentioning Quakeworld? Fail. Then again, you are born in 1992 so how would you know about that.

I have to put my vote down for Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare mainly because the whole of the game, not just the multiplayer feels nice & tight. The story mode has a great & addictive story as well.

I'm handing this one off to ET, for the Atari 2600. That game was so epic you didn't even know you were FPSing.

In all seriousness though, I gotta give it to Gears.

CoD 4 for me i was able to familiarize myself with the maps pretty quickly and i thought it was pretty balanced
