Well since the two are about as different as mustard and marmite, I think it's more then a bit silly to compare the two like this..

Fallout 3, because the main quest was so awesome
"Hey, how about you go into the same dungeon over and over again" was not very appealing

Oblivion. I thought the gunplay in Fallout was rather lackluster, while the swords and bows worked fine in Oblivion. And given you'll be fighting a lot in both games, the combat mechanics seem rather important.

That, and there are better post-apocalyptic games on the market than Fallout. Oblivion stands out as one of the few kickass open-world fantasy RPGs.

FFS, for the last time. I wasn't trying to compare them, I was asking which one the users prefer. And choosing would be much easier because they are 'as different as mustard and marmite'.

/sigh

I actually dislike both games. Not with a fiery passion, though. Oblivion and everything before it just has crappy first person fighting experiences. The whole...Fallout3 bored me. I'm sorry guys.

I really couldn't get in to Oblivion and I really am in love with Fallout 3 and I probably won't stop playing it for a while.

Fallout 3, by far. In fact, since getting Fallout 3, I can't play Oblivion any more. It's just been outclassed, in my opinion.

The combat in Fallout 3 is better, the story, the setting, the acting, the graphics (no more insane bloom), even the music. It's a great improvement. Oblivion was brilliant for its time, but now, its allure has worn off somewhat.
This.

Plus I have a vendetta against medival fantasy settings that I simply can not explain.
That was a time I wanted to live in the medieval times, but then I thought about air conditioner. And my laptop! My cell phone? PSP? IPod!?

Oblivion is great, so don't get me wrong, but Fallout 3 is so, so much more fun. I actually loved the VATS system, and I didn't think the combat was too bad. What made it for me was the setting and exploration. I'm a huge fan of the post-apocalypse, and Fallout 3 was, to me, the pinnacle and best example of the setting down right. Everything felt so desolate and relentlessly bleak, that I couldn't help but get "drunk" with the world and try to explore every inch of the map. Fallout 3 was a game tailor-made for me, a post-apocalyptic junkie with a hard-on for exploration in games. Still the only game, next to Saints Row 2, where I spent more than six hours just doing random shit.

You know what's so pathetic about me? I couldn't play it the first time because I was too afraid of the giant ants. I know, I know. The giant spiders in DA:O also scare me. But they don't scare me from playing an awesome game anymore.
It's a good thing you didn't play farther into it. Between the albino radscorpions and the hideous centaurs, you probably would've had a heart attack.

OP: It's hard to say but I would probably end up on Fallout 3. Even though I prefer the fantasy setting of Oblivion, Fallout 3 had so many improvements to combat (VATS is awesome and will hopefully be the first nail in the coffin of QTEs) the environment, leveling up, and even the acting.

Oh ok them simple, get both of them, they're two of the best games of this generation, but if you must choose, ask yourself this "What do I like more, elves, magic and swords in a fantasy setting, or mutants, guns and 50s themes, in a post apocolyptic setting?" answer that question and you'll know which one to buy first (Seriously though get both games if you have the chance).

Fallout 3. FPSRPGs are probably my favorite genre of games. Any RPG's besides Final Fantasy I have a hard time with. And Dragon Age was my first game that ever had elves/trolls or whatever the hell the other things were. A bit to... fantasyish for me, and that is how Oblivion looked.

It didn't vote because it is the equivalent of saying do you like SotC or Pacman. They are both great for their time and have comletely different story/gameplay.
Are you sure you're talking about the same games? I mean, Oblivion and Fallout 3 were built on the same engine, as for general feel of the game, they're almost identical.
To be honest mine are on different consoles and ive never played them on anything else, so to me they feel different.

Word of caution though, the friendly AI in those game are horrible, really the only flaw in those games, is that your allies are constantly running in front of your weapon so you kill them and and your other allies turn on you for killing this first guy, and you're forced to kill them to, it's maddening, (For the sake of your sanity, in Fallout 3 when you have to escort someone to a place called "Bigtown," run ahead and KILL EVERYTHING before having him follow you, he CONSTANTY runs in front of your VATS aimed shots and kills himself (And you if you have an explosive weapon), causing you to lose Karma and the residents of Bigtown hating you).
