I used to play Guard before I came to college (there's no game store around here). The only problem with them is that fielding an army, ESPECIALLY an infantry/meatshield heavy army is REALLY expensive. Daemonhunters would be the cheapest, Tau would run in the middle (they were my 2nd favorite, so that's all good), and Guard come out on top if you're willing to blow the money. Plus, back when Guard had doctrines, it was really fun to surprise opponents by doing things Guard usually wouldn't do (drop troops ftw!)

Only go Daemonhunters if you're rich as hell and can afford a crap load of pewter models.

I would say go Daemonhunters, as the more of us we can get the sooner we can get a new codex, but for a newcomer they are a nightmare. Hardly any models, hard to paint and expensive. You would be better of with Tau or Guard. However you may find the Tau a bit difficult to use at the start, but thats not the point, the point is you get battle suits which are cool.

Of course you could always go for a combined IG/Daeminhunters force. That is perfectly legal.
Then you can get these.

Oh yeah, theres a good way to add CQC to your guard.
Protip: He's completely right. A good disruption/suicide tactic is to shove a Grand Master HQ in there with a retinue of Grey Knight Terminators, and depending on your enemy, you should give them either psycannons for tougher enemies, or flamers for orks and the like (hordes), Deep Strike them into enemy lines, Holocaust a squad (it's a psychic power, and the best one) and charge into an enemy next turn, not to mention the fact that with a nemesis force weapon in the hands of a grandmaster, you can use it to insta-jib anything you hit/wound. Tyranid Hive Tyrants, Carnifexes, Bloodthirsters, Avatars of Khaine, they all die to the Grand Master insta-jib. It's great. A Grand Master with Terminators is a force to truly be reckoned with, especially when they're matched with the power of the Heavy Weapons that the IG have access to.

If you do go with Guard, which according to the poll so far you are, It's important to know what kind of army you're going to play. If you're willing to spend a lot of money and take a lot of time, a massed infantry IG army is terrifying, and you should probably get some basilisks. If you're going to make a tank-based army, you're going to want to get a lot of Hellhound transports, and you may want to look into using veterans instead of platoons of soldiers. If you do that, a large force of Valkyrie Vendettas and Leman Russ battle tanks are in order.

Tau are the absolute bomb. Having said that, Imperial Guard have some awesome tactical options up their sleeves (not to mention some BIIIG guns)...
yeah...
Men! Go! Clog up that tank's treads with your mauled bodies!
Men! Go! Pile your dead asses and create a staircase over that 10 mile hight wall!
Men! Go! that repeating machine gun can't cut all of you down!

Facetiousness aside, I actually liked the Guard. I still love the cannon fodder attack through.

I keep getting mixed answers on this, are the guard or the DH more expensive?
Daemon Hunters is a smaller army, but most miniatures are expensive and few in number.

Guard is the bigger army, but you also get many more models for the same price you'd pay for the DH.

I'd say they even out, although Guard gives you more options for the same money.

I voted for IG too though less for the reason of just artillery or replication of a historical theme and instead because of the chance to really flesh out the backstory as well as cater to the diversity of the Imperial Guard. Yeah I work with Imperial guard, three types actually, then Space Marines, as well as Eldar, and Sisters of battle so I guess there's enough experience since the last fleeting days of second edition.

But the Imperial guard recently have one thing in spades most others don't. The variety both in miniatures, as Iwata has so aptly pointed out, but also the immense amount of variation you can have in Imperial guard itself is quite amazing. If you like tanks, yay, you can get them and a lot of them, if you like airborne, you're in luck with the valkyries, want a penal legion? you've got that too, conscripted peasants, elite raiders, long range artillery, city fighting hardcore veteran infantry, abhuman axillary, devotees of the tech-god Omnissiah, on and on.

Personally I'm working with a full company of Vostroyans partially mechanized for command units, and a single Eradicator point-tank. Don't be afraid to look outside the box too; if you like commissars, include them, the insanity of the Ecclasiastical priesthood, go have fun. For me, I happen to really like ogryns and ratlings using several different non-ogre and non-halfling models. As for what's more expensive, depeneds, that variety is a killer... don't ask how much my vostroyans, converted chimera APC's, and Infinity line Weregryns were.

So, what units would you recommend me getting to start off?
Well, Company Command and two platoons are necessary. Each platoon has to be made up of a Platoon Command Squad and 20 Guardsmen. So, that's the necessary part. A codex is also great help.

After that, it's all about the style you'd rather play:

If you want a "defensive" army that has to move very little, the "gunline" is a classic formation. This one needs a lot of bodies and a lot of guns, so Guardsmen and Heavy Weapon Squads should be a priority. After that, artillery, transports and elite squads. Finally, a few tanks and smaller vehicles for tactical maneuvers.

If you want a "mobile" army, then transports, fast-moving vehicles and tanks. Artillery is basically useless, heavy weapon squads as well. These have to secure objectives quickly and defend them. They're good at attacking and taking objectives, but their biggest defense is just running from a fight, when it isn't necessary.

For a "slow attack" army, you'd want a little bit of everything, but tanks and infantry are priority. They just have to move slowly, using tanks for support to take down big enemies and the infantry should be able take care of themselves.

There are far more many types, but these are, or I've been told so, are the most "basic" of the Imperial Guard. Tactics are crucial for smaller forces, seeing as the Guard's strength lies completely in it's guns and vehicles.

Personally, I found it helpful to get a lot of guardsmen and heavy weapon squads first, since what the Guard lacks in stopping power, it makes up for in numbers. These should be a priority for most new players, since the sheer amount of guns is the best thing about the guard. Then, tanks and artillery.

For a Guard player, it's best to have a little bit of everything, even though it's possible to beat the enemy with any army combination possible. Of course, that's just my opinion.

For good tips regarding the IG, visiting this place [http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/imperial-guard/], is a good idea.

The IG are cheaper per model, since you can get lots of weak troops for the same price as a few powerful troops of the DH. Personally, I just like to have a lot of troops, since the opponent sometimes may quit just because you have to roll so many dice to fire so many weapons.

that would be really really funny
It does happen sometimes to me, since I use a gunline and have more than a hundred guns. Once they get in range, it's just a long period of rolling and sometimes, they just don't have the patience.

Who wants to be normal space marines when you can be the BA's?
This is kind of my point. Every edition, vanilla marines are the first new book, and by the end of said edition, they always seem to have the worst deal out of all the space marine chapters. look at DA compared to the last version of SM and see what I mean.

Forget 40K, it's for hyperactive 12 year olds, it's all about Warhammer, especially since they're relaunching it soon.
