Forget 40K, it's for hyperactive 12 year olds, it's all about Warhammer, especially since they're relaunching it soon.
what do you mean relaunching?
The 8th edition is coming out this June. Word is, though, that it's a bit of a rush job. We'll see.

All I know is, I spent all of today fiddling with my Volistad 1st and my Blood Angels, thanks to the OP for renewing my interest in the topic.

I went with Eldar, and my little bro switch recently from IG to BA. He much prefers the BA, what with a flying dreadnought that hits a strength 10 and continues to hit at strength 10 until it misses.

Pity it can't do shit against a squad of elves armed with anti-tank weaponry.

Just picked up the codex to the IG, and that is one good read, and the unit variety was just stunning

so i can take them with my IG?
Of course. They're Space Marines, warriors of the Imperium.
Sorry I didn't check this thread for a day or 2, but I'm not so sure. You can take Space Marine and IG forces with Daemon Hunters and Witch Hunters. You can take WH and DH with IG or Space Marines. However, you can't just mix IG and SMs. Plus, I'd have to check the WH and DH codex, but I think they can just take "Space Marines", not "Blood Angels". They ARE different armies, technically.

The Guard is always a good choice, although the Angry Red Flashlights of Death-IMEAN-"Lasguns"... let's just say that there is a reason they are cheap.

If you're talking about starting out on the tabletop game, then go with guard, Tau can be tricky to use and may frustrate new players.

If you're talking about suddenly transmuting into one of the 40K races, then go tau, those little blue buggers have got it made!

Nope, you can in fact take any Space Marine chapter as allies if you're playing Imperial Guard, including non-Codex Astartes chapters, such as the Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Dark Angels, Black Templars, etc.

Well, I'd say the best I can do is say "what type of fighter are you?"

The three you have chosen are very different in the tactics they are designed for, so I guess I'll just lay those out.

The Tau specialize in mechanized assault and ranged combat. They are hit-and-run specialists, because their stats have them very suspetible to hand-to-hand combat. If they get charged, the lieklihood of them surviving is rather low, but if you keep them at rapid-fire range, you can easily pulverise any and all targets without thinking about it. If you get these guys, be prepared to buy lots of Devilfish APCs and a Hammerhead or two. These guys LOVE using vehicles.

Imperial Guard I have always thought of as a steamroller. Individually, they are weak. Together, it's like a fricking wall of lasgun fire. If you go for this army, you'll be spending a lot of money on basic troops and spending a lot of time painting. On the tabletop, I'd say they are basically firing a crapload of crummy bullets, but the fact that so many can fire at once means the chances of actually wounding are quite high. THem get some vehicles and a few special units and you'll have an army.

The Demonhunters I guess are just super-powered space marines. You'll be buying a lot of metal minis, and will probably always be outnumbered and possibly outgunned. Demonhunters would have to relay on strategy and tactics to win.

So, the question remains: what kind of fighter are you?
