There will always be another free social networking site out there. No way would I pay for facebook; I'd just go someplace else.

I bet if you were on "Chrome", the spell checker that is on by default is going mental.

Well considering I don't use those services even though they are free I doubt very much that making me pay would increase my chances of using them, sorry.

Charging for using internet resources such as that while at the same time running ads and such strikes me as a very bad idea.
Yes, but people prove time-and-time again to be less intelligence than even I give them credit for. It's quite possible people WILL pay for such a service, making it even more profitable.

They've said the same thing about hotmail and several thousand other free sights on the internet. And I've said I wouldn't use any of them if they started charging.

FIXED.

And no, Facebook is not going to start charging for it's services. That is a false rumor started to get dense folk like you to join slack-tivist Facebook groups.

Besides, Facebook makes far more via adverts and it's targeted surveys than it would from subscriptions.

Never in a million jillion gagazillion years. Their site pisses me off enough as it is. I just use it to stay in touch with some people who are out of state, and can't stand most of the crappy applications and all that they use. So if I had to start paying for that crap? One deleted account and a lot of negative feedback in their inbox.

Yes, it's a wonderful networking tool, and with the new updates I find it quite easy to plan things with friends/classmates.
You'd seriously pay for Facebook?
Well to each their own, I suppose. But I would consider that a complete waste of my money. Wanna get in touch with me? Email me. Or find me on the Escapist. Those two things I check all the time.

Facebook? Not so much.

They won't start charging. It's just a rumour. It would be commercial suicide. They get their money from other places and they get a lot of it. Charging would drive user numbers down drastically. Just look what happened with Faceparty, you had to pay for the crappy Cool Tools thing. But when Myspace came along where you could do EVERYTHING that CT did plus loads more, Faceparty suddenly took a massive dip.

If we had to pay, me and my mates would just go down the pub and talk - that why I wouldn't have to put up with their constant shortening of words and extremely emo status information

Huzzah, to pay for data-mining algorhythms is such a stellar idea! Just when I got dissasisfied enough with having them for free!

While things like Facebook and MySpace are good keeping-in-touch (to an extent) tools, they are only as such if they remain free. However, as AndyVale noted, changing to a pay-for-use type thing would be suicide. Most of those rumors probably are started from official-sounding sources heard by gullible people and it snowballs from there until the real official source has to come out and say, "I am not gay There will be no paying for using this website." That's why they have advertisements.

The rumor that MySpace/Facebook/what-have-you has persisted for a while now. They're not going to charge, and posting countless bulletins "rallying support against" the change just clogs my status page.

Umm, HELL NO. The reason I joined Facebook is so I could get in touch with my old friends from high school and long-distance relatives for free. FREE was the whole idea that sold me, and that it wasn't as full of emo kids, goths, bros, and my ex- like Myspace was. If they were to force you to pay for Facebook, it would fail in an instant.

Yeah, its really just wonderful for group projects since everyone has it. Just write a note and send it to whoever, it's alot better than blackboard(my school system of email/online classes).

EDIT: For me email is snail mail, as most only check it once or twice a day.

Facebook isn't really important enough to pay for. If they started charging people I would leave immediately because I stay in touch with the people I care about and other than uploading pictures it doesn't seem to have any other function worth paying for.
