I've been a little upset the past week, yet I couldn't quite put my finger on why. Well, it finaly kind of dawned on me. Why Michael Jackson over so many others? Why is he getting the attention?

To me, Carlin had much more impact on my life than Jackson. Sure I liked many of his songs, but other than that he was just kind of a weird guy who I was always trying to ignore in the media. Carlin on the other hand kept showing up time and time again to not only make me laugh my ass off, but to make me think about things. And he didn't have to be a media whore to get my attention.

So my topic is, who in your opinion is the bigger loss to the world?

Though I figured there's be some people who didn't know much about Carlin, I'm actualy shocked at how many people say they don't know him at all. Figured he'd be universal (or at least global) if only from Kevin Smith's Dogma.

Why is there no Billy Mays choice?

Why is there no option for "Neither, they were both meaningless to me"?

Because thats what I would vote for.
I originaly was going to put a lot of options, but I opted for only the two to keep the poll from going askew. I chose George Carlin over everyone else because not only was he completely awesome but I figured more people would know him over a lot of other personalities. I'm actualy very surprised by the amount of "Who is he?" I'm getting. Like I stated before, I figured people would at least know him for his roles in movies, if not his stand-up.

Personaly, I like Michael Jackson. I like many of his songs and when I hear them, I can't help but sing along to them, sometimes having to stop myself from dancing around. I love his Moonwalker movie; It's great! I also loved Thriller and still think it's one of the best videos ever made. I personaly don't even believe him to be a pedophile. Just some guy who's head is not on right. His parents and the public have screwed him up so very much. And I believe they are the reason he's dead right now. Between all his surgery and medication, all for them.

And now all these people are coming out of the woodwork to praise him. People who've never cared before are seen in the streets crying. Even coming onto this site, never once had I seen a single MJ thread, but the day he died there were way too many to count. Yet the death of anyone else, only the people who cared before really cares.

Billy Mays was a good salesman. He was energetic, amusing, and had tons of charisma. But he was only a recent fad to me. Thirty years from now, people will still be dicussing, watching, listening to Michael Jackson and Georg Carlin, but the only people who will care about Billy Mays are people studying him in school.

And if this was about people dying too young, Heath Ledger and Mitch Hedberg would have been the two choices. This is about how messed up the world is when it comes to death. Someone great dies and no one cares. Someone popular dies and it's the end of the fucking world. What the hell is wrong with this picture?

Both.

And I don't care if you call me a cheater. They were both idols to me.
Honestly I don't have a problem with answers like this. If you loved Michael Jackson, then by all means let his death impact your life. But if you're just jumping on the "OMG MJ is ded!" bandwagon (like oh so many are), there's something wrong with this picture.

Like I said, I liked Michael Jackson, but his death shouldn't be the only one on everyone's minds. I find how people are acting not only disrespectful to other pasted celebrities, but also to Jackson himself.

I'm also finding it surprising how many people don't seem to care at all. Mind you, I'm not overly emotional about anyone's death I don't personaly know, but if you've enjoyed thier work, you should feel some compassion for thier life. Not saying you should cut yourself or go wailing throughout the streets, but c'mon. Inwardly say "Damn!" at least.

Since I was born in 91 I did not have a single good memory of Michael Jackson.

George Carlin was more important. He pushed the envelope of what you can say on t.v. and he brought up a lot of political issues. Wereas Micheal Jackson was just some weird looking pedophile I.M.O. who shouldn't have gotten so much attention.

My cat Lightning, followed by my cat Sweep, then my cat Sooty who have all sadly passed on.

People I've never met have very little effect on me, living or dead.

Come on, is this even a competition? George Carlin was a bloody comedic genius... and maybe even an actual genius. There are very few people who compare to him of recent days.

Let's see...The Seven Things You Can't Say On Television versus Thriller...

I'm sorry, but Michael Jackson gets my vote. Carlin was a great comedian, but MJ's was just something right out of the blue. Plus I liked Rodney Dangerfield more than George. Either way, there's a great party going on in Heaven right now.

George Carlin. He was my dad's favorite comedian of all time and he died the day before my dad's birthday. It was awful.

I took Billy Mays' pretty bad, too. But I believe when I heard Walter Cronkite died I said out loud "Goddammit." That was sad too. People need to stop dying.

George Carlin, clearly.

When I was little, I remember him being the Conductor on whatever that train show was. And when I grew up--he had lots of amazing comedy and social commentary for me to watch. So he's great for all ages.

But when I was little, MJ was black and interesting. But when I grew up, he changed colors and became creepy.

Props for the Bill & Ted reference.

Also, Carlin. My entire prostitution argument comes directly from his stand-up.

Neither of them to be blunt. I was more disappointed with Billy Mays dying simply because he was just cool.

If I'm even remotely depressed about anyone's death it would have to be Dimebag. I know it's years late but shit, he was awesome.

I really, really, reeheeheeally didn't care about either of them. People die all the time. Shit happens. Sure I loved Carlin's stand-up and Michael Jackson had a couple of really catchy songs but I didn't give either of them a second thought. I heard the news and continued. It's not like I was close personal friends with either of them or anything.
