I think people who "hate" metal don't kow what metal is. It is not just ONE genre but many and they are very different. Saying you hate metal is like saying you hate rock or pop, the spectrum is just so wide. Metal can be fast but also slow, it can be brutal and angry but also calm and mellow or even beautiful, it can be simple but also extremly complex.

Because modern heavy metal is shit. Led Zeppelin all the way.
For me, it would have to be my inability to discern from whats metal to heavy metal, there are bands i listen who maybe heavy metal, but for all know its just rock.

He mentions Zep, i listen to them, and only now i know that is heavy metal

Because that isn't they're type of music? Everyone has their own taste.

Anyway who cares what they think, we all know metal rocks all :p

I was under the impression that Heavy Metal had become obnoxiously popular at this point. That level of popularity where it has extremely few genuine connoisseurs and the rest are just downright metalheads (in the negative context).

Another question, Why do so many people bother so much about others hating something that they are flooding the forums with "why the hate" threads?
Just ignore em and have fun with what you are doing, other peoples opinions are as interesting as the weather in southwest-china.

I don't care for the opinions of others. I want to understand WHY they have those opinions.

I may not be conformist or a perfect person but that shouldn't be based on music preferences.
Pretty much why most people don't like those that listen to heavy metal. To not be a conformist, you must become one...most popular standards are so fucking doubled, it makes hypocrisy look like Mother Theresa.

If anyone says heavy metal sucks, show them this [http://rockhall.com/inductees/metallica/] and/or this [http://rockhall.com/inductees/black-sabbath/] and tell them to shut up.

I think a lot of people mistake heavy-metal for death metal. They don't like it (me included) but it sounds similar so they hate heavy metal as well.

I like some metal but a lot of it involves annoying posing. Yes, some bands are being ironic and thats kind of funny - but a lot aren't. What annoys me is that some of it is lyrically and musically juvenille and appeals to a "badass" sensibility that I find irritating.

However some of it is awesome. There are some very gifted musicians/lyricists playing in metal bands that come up with agressive music which isn't try-hard.

I think this is a similar problem that affects most genres of music. In any given genre probably 80% of the output is rubbish or generic with another 10% being fine and, if you are lucky, another 10% being awesome (please note those are in no way scientifically caluclated). What happens is that those ufamiliar with the genre are most likely to encounter examples that fall into the bad 80% range and so be put off straight away.

I have not read through the posts, just wanted to add my own opinion. I have always been into metal and enjoyed it for the last 16 years. People never really give it the attention or respect some of it deserves. There is usually more depth and meaning in a metal track than in any other form of music (I am encompassing old stuff like Led-Zep AC/DC etc in as well as my idea of "heavy Metal" in this too).

For me the closest music to it is classical :p

People who hate the music have the right to do so, but for musical taste only, not to have an outright "hate" for the music in general.

I really don't care about all these music genres. I listen to anything, pop, metal, hip-hop, punk, whatever Daft Punk is (I'm loath to call it dance or house), math rock (<3), etc.

What I tend to hear more often is people bitching about mainstream music. The moment something becomes popular, people start to lament it as a regression in the overcommercialized world that is the music industry or something. Just fuck off; I should be able to listen to something that isn't indie without being labeled a fucking philistine.

I dislike it because a good lot of it sounds like they are trying to gargle the microphone. I also dislike it when they scream.

Personally, I find it boring. I like some industrial, but heavy metal.. too homogenic for me. I often feel that people listening to it are using it to overcompensate for their lack of personal skills, lack of interesting personality, lack of a fulfilling life or a generally bad attitude. Not saying everyone who listens to it is like that. Just seems to me that that's the types who are attracted to it. But, what the fuck do I know. People probably say my kind of music is for losers who'd rather talk about sound modulation that have sex with other people. And they're probably right.

Meh, it just doesn't appeal to me. It's just noise, pure unadulterated noise. If you like it, great. If you don't, great.

I don't see why anyone doesn't like Heavy Metal. It was one of the best animated films I've ever seen. Decent magazine too.

A fair few metalheads often seem to have this superiority complex about their music. I've twice before been in an argument with a metalhead that was literally started by the phrase "Metal is a superior genre to all others". And no, they were not taking the piss. I also have multiple friends who have been in the same situation. Having fans like that does not make the genre particularly endearing to others.

Other then that, I personally do not find the genre at all enjoyable, its far to noisy and aggressive for my taste. However, that is just my taste, and if you listen metal and do not feel need to attack every other genre of music, then I have no problem with that at all.
