I had a very heated conversation recently with a man who a grudge against Heavy Metal. Being a metalhead I was angered inside that he could hate my music but still heard him out because I'm not a closed minded zealot. I don't blame him for not having the specific taste to like my music but he didn't even hate it because of how it sounded. He was basing the entire gendre of music on one person's experience. Apparently his brother was depressed, was pressured into listening to the music and it drove him to the brink of suicide. Now it's totally understandable that he doesn't like it but not for those reasons. But one he blamed the state of mind of his brother on it when it was clearly his brother, depression and the people he knew before that caused it. With me it was vice-versa. I was already on the brink of suicide and had no will or reason to live. I went to a heavy metal concert and it opened my eyes to a new world, mainly because for once I was kicking life in the ass, for lack of a better term. It made me a whole new person and gave me the will to live again along with a new outlook on life. But I also like it for the way it sounds and that in loving it i've found people who accept me, I found a place. But it struck me that more people than just him dislike or plainly hate my music. So why do people like the music they like? It's obviously not solely based on the way it's sounds anymore?

I don't like Heavy Metal in great quantity nor is it my music genre of choice but I respect it for what it is. It's Heavy Metal and it will not be shut down. The sound may not be me but I don't blame it (or any one single thing) for someone's problems (or society at large).

Rock on Metalheads, the haters are irrelevant when you're having fun.

It's exactly what I'm saying. I love metal so why do people have to say I'm abnormal for listening to it. I may not be conformist or a perfect person but that shouldn't be based on music preferences.

I don't like heavy metal or metal in general (some exceptions here and there though), tis my music tastes and certainly wouldn't have a go at you for liking metal.

Just we will argue regarding which radio station to put on xD

I dunno why people hate it, and a majority of the time when people dis it i just tell them to fuck off. If you don't like it fine, but don't come to me with you're bullshit "facts" as to why it's the worst form of music.

Its just a common courtesy here my friend.

And I have no idea why I'm supposed to judge you by your choice of music. Does the fact I listen to jazz, techno, latin and classical music make me abnormal?

Humanity, always looking for stereotypes. I try to break them but I'm just one man.

Sorry about that. I think one of the worst stereotypes is that we worship satan. Some metalheads do but I'm pretty sure one rapper or two does it too. I try to break them to. I'm italian and I've have people tell me "Your italian, you people don't like metal". One of the wierdest statements I've ever heard.

I just prefer the slower paced stuff. Also, more lyrics, less screamo helps.
So long as people don't have a go at me for not liking metal, I got nothing much against it.

Imagine a Korean guy headbanging to a Symphonic Metal piece. Funny that?

First of all my head hurts trying to read that so please paragraph next time...

Anyway, people hate Heavy Metal because it doesn't sound appealing to them. Simple as that. Sure it was wrong of him to accuse heavy metal of making his brother go on the brink of suicide but you have to be the bigger man and say' obviously he can not understand the beauty of this music.'

I probably got it the wrong way so please, explain in a bit more organized fashion >.>

That is a paragraph, actually it's the proper lenght of a paragraph, 8-10 sentences, it's 11. Not too much over.

Okay not going to debate over how you form a paragraph so instead I will ask does this look better? I hope it does

Well, I used to like a lot of heavy metal/screamo (SlipKnot were my favourite, I really liked them). But I sort of grew out of that phase.

But when I listen to that stuff now, it either all sounds the same, or it just doesn't sound good. When music is just 3 raw electric guitars with too much distortion, along with a man screaming and growling, it doesn't sound nice to me.

Also I don't like the whole mindset that comes with listening to it. Yelling about pain, suffering, hate etc. It just makes me think of bad things, like a black dark place full of suffering, and that's why I don't really enjoy listening to it.

I mean I, sort of the opposite of you, used to be slightly depressed and sad, not being able to see the point in living. But then when I tried to start thinking happier (which has worked, incidentally) one of the things I did was stop listening to that sort of music.

TL;DR. The sound and image that it creates doesn't appeal to me.

Perhaps. I'm not going to say ALL metal is great. I personally can't stand screamo (which is different) but the metal I listened to was uplifting and inspired me. ManOwaR was one of those bands, a band I like extremely.

Eh, I reckon it's not worth listening to solely for the shitty growly vocals that appear in most heavy metal songs. There's a couple that stand out, usually instrumental ones (particularly those experimental bands like Tool or Shelter Red), but for the most part it's just not that good. Like any genre.

Your mixing gendres. In most Heavy Metal there's no growling. It's mostly reserved to Nu metal, Core and Black metal. Screamo isn't metal, it's punk, different.

To me it just sounds like angry noise, it's just plain unpleasant. I don't understand how people can like it but I'm not making a fuss.

Perhaps but then again all hip-hop and rap sounds like to me is repeated beats and lyrics pertaining to drugs, money, gangs, guns and abusing women. I don't just listen to metal. Also I'm not telling people to listen solely to metal. I'm saying some people have to expand their horizon a little. I like big band music from the fifties like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. I also like metal. I'm not going to restrict myself to a certain gendre but I'm not going to hate another one completely because I don't like 99.9% of the songs.
