no meat when fasting according to jewish/catholic cannon, fish is not considered meat because it was a staple food, and meat refereed to pork, etc... so, fish was not just randomly said to not be meat, it simply was not what was meant when they said no meat, the Jewish word used did not mean all animals it meant all types that would be used for a feast... fish was what they ate every day and was not included because pepole would not have a core food.

It's because they are made of foam latex.

Seriously I would not know why people don't think fish is meat.

For some reason, only pig/cow qualifies as meat in here. If I go to any shop, and go to the fresh meat section, the labels read "Fish/Chicken/Meat". It's not people being retarded, it's like an official language thing. Quite weird, and I've never understood it.

A lot of people don't treat fish as a meat because they're fucking stupid. Don?t be fooled into thinking these pathetic posers are true vegetarians as they eat fish. A true vegetarian (like myself) does not eat any animal, anyone found doing so can GTFO if they think they are actually a vegetarian. I've been vegetarian for 7 years now and it sickens me to see these posers pretending to be vegetarians.
why do you care? if they are doing it because they feel the animals are being abused and don't think fish are, than they are still taking the same stand that you are, and if they are doing it for health reasons then why give a flying shit?

also, i don't think that animals are abused and i like meat, so why are you a vegetarian? just a question out of curiosity... is it because you think they are being abused, is it because you don't like meat, is it because you felt like it, it is religious? just wondering... :)

Not to stereotype all vegetarians this way, but some of them view fish as meat mostly because it's not an animal that is cute or cuddly, nor does it live in any kind of 'cruel farming' situation. Of course, it could also be a throwback to the old Catholic ruling about fish, but I honestly think that vegetarians accept it because it's an animal you can relate to far less then most mammals/birds. I always find it funny when one of my environmentalist, hippie friends crushes a bug because they're 'gross' but they'll whine whenever I want to go to a place that serves meat.

Fish generally aren't cute enough. The same reason it's more acceptable to kill a spider or fly than a puppy.

Well, except this little fellow:

I think we have a winner, here. If everyone's honest, anyways.

Most pescatarians I know say they eat fish because they need the oils and acids and such, as well as the complete proteins. I don't know the validity of that, it's just what's fed to me. Soybeans contain most of those things (apart from complete proteins), but whatever.

Whatever toots your horn, I guess. Eat what you like -- there's no need to try to justify it.

I've had this arguement with "vegetarians" before. One told me it because fish aren't killed in slaughtehouses. Apparently they thought fish was killed in a nicer way than cattle or sheep, which makes it okay to eat.

I seem to remember that during lent, when meat is off the menu, a lot of catholics turn to fish, and there's record of the pope decided beavers and turtles were fish, just so catholics could have some meat when they weren't allowed it.

Note to self, don't go swimming during Lent, there might be a catholic with a harpoon and a portable BBQ.

Honestly, tho I think it's kinda funny, its not meant as a serious knock on religion, more just a funny thing that comes from how we name things.

As for myself, I'm giving up pizza, unless it has pepperoni on it, because I call that kinda pizza 'a bowl of rice'.

Nobody thinks fish isn't a meat. Some vegetarians eat fish for various reasons, but not because they believe it's not meat. Vegetarians are generally quite rational, pragmatic people, not fundamentalist zealots who think "OMG can't eat meat not even a fucking snail."

I guess most of those vegetarians who eat fish do so because it is the healthiest of all meats, and because fish are idiots like snails.

I'm a part-time vegetarian, but not because I care about animals dying. I don't really give a shit about them. (Unless they're endangered species.) I'm vegetarian because I care about people dying. There is a scarcity of food in this world, and meat is a very inefficient (in terms of nutrition) use of our food resources. A cow eats 6 kg of plant protein for every 1 kg of meat protein it produces. The meat industry is thus a significant contributor to human starvation.

So I'm okay with eating fish, because they only eat stuff which can't really be eaten by humans.

EDIT: inb4 Soylent fish is people.

Back when people figured out how to preserve meat better people no longer had to go buy fresh fish on a regular basis. Since this was hurting the the fishermen, which there were alot of, the church started the fish on Friday tradition so the fishermen wouldn't end up jobless. Since no other meat was allowed people started to make a distinction between fish and other meat.

Fish = meat because:

Fish =/= vegetable
Fish =/= mineral
Fish =/= liquid

I don't see what else fish could be so I'll stick with meat until a new classification can surface for it.
Fish = Dairy

Because vegetarians are stupid and want to be able to eat everything, and justify it when they do. As to why I think Vegetarians are stupid, I'll have to link to Maddox for this one...

Please, Maddox may be a bit absurd but his point is very valid and I urge every vegetarian to read it through thoroughly.

Fish is meat.

But my only guess aside from the obvious religious reasons is that fish are cold blooded non-mammalian. So for some reason that makes them different. I suppose if people ate lizards with any regularity, they might also be counted "Not meat" by some people.
