Faceless, accountable to no-one and able to wreak massive havoc.

Yeah, why would anyone be worried about a group like that?

Technically anonymous isn't really an organization at all. I would consider it a loose confederacy of people who specialize in computers who assist each other in mutual partnership.
You do realize that you just used a pretty good definition for the word "organization" to claim that Anonymous doesn't qualify as one, right?
You misunderstand. An organization would imply that all members are working towards a single direction with each member working in tangent witgh ine another. anonymous has no directive, no goal, and no defined leadership. Its more of a group of friends than an organization.

I just can't get over how every time Anonymous is mentioned, all ye who hear them begin shaking in their proverbial internet boots. Why is this? Why does everyone believe this? Sure, there are anonymous hackers out there that attack consumers, but come on.

Oh, that must be why.
Thats not the reason I hate Anonymous, I used to be a fervant supporter of theirs, even going so far as trying to get funding to them. I learned more about them, and their attacks on Scientologists, the U.S. Defense Department, the Westboro Baptist Church, and other (I feel) deserving targets are only a fraction of what they do. Bear in mind that the group originates from 4chan, and nothing good has ever come of 4chan. They've harrassed and sent death threats to underage children such as 11 year old Jessi Slaughter, they mocked and defaced the memorial Facebook page of bullied children who committed suiced such as Asher Brown. Men such as Julian Assage are heros, fighting against censorship and attempts at media control. If you just pay attention to the Escapist headlines, they seem like righteous champions of free-speech, but once you look into the majority of their activities, you recognize that many involved in this organization are merely trolls, otakus, and angry, nihilistic social-maljusts who use their advanced knowledge of the internet to get back at the world, often by picking on those weaker than them.

I don't know if you'll head this knowledge, its a sad truth that embittered me when I find out myself. The Paladins of CyberJustice I thought these people were turned out to pedophiles and cyberbullies.

They're not bound to any alignment, because they aren't really a whole organization. Hell, you can't even say 4Chan is the source of everything, since each board is independent.

Most of the time, you get raids and trolls, but a lot of the times, the good stuff they do makes up for it IMO.

But even if you think that what they are doing is wrong, they're at least doing something to change the world; for better or worse. And it's a hell of a lot more than what everyone else is.

EDIT: Also, the whole PSN thing? Really? There's plenty of other holes of villainy that could do the exact same thing.

anonymous main role is to protect free speech and have lulz
That would be well and good, except for the fact that the group has shown itself to be completely hypocritical, basing their attacks on Sony on the fact that Sony was granted access to information. Information, of course, should be free for all, accoring to the bullshit that most hackers spew from their word boxes, when they talk about why they don't respect the privacy of others.

Give me 5 minutes wth a couple of these jack offs, and we'll see who's laughing at the end. All I'll need will be 5 blank cds and a loaded Swingline stapler.

For the record, I'm not angry wth Sony for my personal information being stolen from PSN. I'm angry at the fucking thieves who took it. And, well, Anonymous claimed credit on Facebook. It's clobbering time if I ever meet one of these bastards.
You do realize that there isn't a single shed of proof for your claims.
"Take a break from online gaming for a while.....it will help your skills, your health, and your emotional levels, which by the way are a bit out of order if they are being shackled by the PSN being down. We have no qualms about our actions, even though it may affect fellow anonymous or supporters... we hope they understand the bigger picture."

That's from their Facebook page, posted 10 days ago. Sounds a lot like gloating, to me. Excuse me, I need to find my stapler.
2 things
1) A post from Facebook is hardly conclusive evidence.
2) Anyone who doesn't post information of any kind without using their real name, and picture of themselves is in fact anonymous. I hope you enjoy your new piercings.

I view them as thugs that think they're doing the right thing. Supporting and applauding the kid who pile-drived the bully into the ground? Good. Spamming the bully's house, sending threats to him, and making his every moment a living hell? Not good. Attacking the school for suspending the kid? Ass Holes.
Saying they don't like Sony and perhaps messing with a few of their websites? Annoying, but okay. Publishing private information on several Sony employees for the entire world to see? Jerks. Trying to go after the KIDS of Sony employees? Total ass holes.

For everyone "one" good thing they do, there are many more bully and thug tactics that they use that completely wipes out the small good things. This is how I see them, and nothing will ever make me change that view. I'm sorry, that's just how it goes.

One thing about Jessie Slaughter that a lot of people forget is, she said "Any type of fame, I'll take." Anonymous just obliged.

I see them as people with good motives who may not always go the right way about things.

All those massive trollings on innocent sites? All the death threats and verbal harassments towards the families of people who died?

Anonymous is a group that portrays itself as under a somewhat noble cause and then does everything they can to show that they are far from noble.
My opinion is pretty much this in a nutshell.

I can go further and add that they are dangerous. Their very nature allows them to attack indescriminately and the claim no responsibility. I also can't stand behind anyone who openly supports piracy, cracking/hacking, and DDoSing to get their point(s) across.

Sometimes they do what is needed but other times they bring nothing but pointless bullshit down on the rest of us deeply rooted web crawlers.

Sony did a damned press conference to explain that it wasn't Anon.

I like the part where I always valued the mask over the corporation.
