Poll: Why don't they just have keybord/mouse functionality on the consoles?

I skimmed this thread. My question is thus:

What is the point? "Oh goody, I can play an RTS on my console, that was not designed for my console, at capped frame rates!"

Actually, this might be a good thing - console players can see what it is to get a truly bad port for once.

because then it would just be a gaming PC. the entire console idea would be obsolete.
plus, i dont like the keyboard setup for some games.

If you have to become an expert then of course you'll be good at aiming with a mouse. I'm sure with enough practice and tweaking the controller can be just as precises.
Sadly, that's simply not true. It is a physical impossibility for an analog joystick (controller) to match the speed and precision that a mouse has, especially the high precision ones.

Keyboard movement is < Joystick movement.

Mouse aiming is > than joystick aiming.

That said a K+M setup requires a desk, and often triggers my arthritis. Whereas a controller is comfortable and more relaxed. Frankly the last thing I want is K+M to come to consoles, I have enough of a problem setting PC games back to gamepads.

I made the switch over to console gaming a few years back and I can't say that I miss M&K much. As you say, it's more comfortable to use a controller and the aiming scheme usually make up for the loss of precision.

The funny part of a lot of these arguments is they're being carried out by people who probably aren't nearly good enough with either control scheme to be one of the elite gamers who can keep a fast moving target in their cross-hairs while on the move.

I would love to be one of those players who can catch a glimpse of a player far off in the distance through a door and casually whack him with a rail gun (see the fifth or sixth kill in that Quake 3 video I posted), but most of us are probably scrapping with people at fairly close range.

It's such a bloody obvious issue it's gotta be wilful corporate ignorance that is keeping the mouse n' keyboard combo away.

I used to have Xubuntu on my PS3; and of course I had keyboard and mouse connected for the Xubuntu GUI and Firefox (c'mon .. the PS3 browser is about as pleasant as the goddamn iPhone's). But sure enough, I couldn't bind anything to mouse & keyboard on the PS3 OS.

All PC gamers think the KB+mouse setup is better, which is fundamentally why they play PC

All console gamers think the Gamepad setup is better, which is fundamentally why they play on consoles.

People should just STFU and accept that difference people prefer and can play to a higher standard in different ways, and that there is no definitively better arrangement, no matter what you like to think.

and please don't reply to this post with half-truths and outright lies about how "oh but there waz dis mixed kb+mouse vs gamepad match once and da kb mouse owned cuz pc gamerz rulezz lololol"

It's all completely subjective, now STFU.

While keyboards/mice tend to give more control a controller is far more convienent, comfier, and easier for the large majority of gamers.

Would be nice for RTS games on the console but all other genres (yes, FPS's work just fine without them. Hence they outselling and overshadowing the genre for the console now, something IMO makes a lot of PC fanboys bitter and jump on the consoletards bandwagon) are better for me with a controller.

This is why using a keyboard and mouse for consoles is viable:

This way you can still be equally as laid back as you would be using a controller, but you don't lose any of the functionality. I have no doubt that Microsoft & Sony could make their own branded version of this and sell it as an optional extra for their consoles.

Microsoft doesn't want you to own just a 360. They want you to own a 360 AND a PC, because they get more money that way.

I like the idea of it, if only to shut people up about it. As far as I'm concerned, I would only use keyboard and mouse controllers on my consoles if technology had developed in such a way that keyboard and mouse can be used from the upside down position.

To be honest I'd rather not use them on consoles I really find controllers easier to use than a keyboard mouse set up, I'm not saying either is better just that's the one I prefer.

Pus vibration feedback on controllers is fun.

It's fine if people want to use it but alot of console games simply would not greatly benefit from that set up so it's unlikely to happen.

I recently tried a computer fps and hated the keyboard and mouse set up. Jerky and bad. It may just be me, but it's not as smooth as a controller.

If you can plug you mouse/keyboard on your consolde, that's lost sales (controllers) for the console compagny. Plus, console games arent designed with mouse/keyboard in mind.
basically this.

plus online? m+kb users would troll every lobby constantly for controller users, the whole point of the console is it puts everyone on a level playing field, always, plus the point of the console is to be able to lay back and relax while gaming, to take your controller basically anywhere while playing, unlike the pc

(granted i game 95% of the time on my pc now, but i do love the perks of gaming on the console)
