Well, for some dumb reason I started wondering why people use facebook (seeing how there is a lot of options for social network-sites), is it for the connection to people? the apps? groups that spout out news about stuff you like? So I decided to bring the question here, to the Escapist.

So what do you use facebook for? And if you don't use it, why?

I try not to use facebook, since a decade worth of ex girlfriends can now "connect" and "poke" me.

Its a stressful time for me to use these social type sites, especially when I had two ex's stake claim to me on "my wall".

I rarely use it unless someone tries to talk to me, but most know not too since i rarely on on. I think it's a useless use of my time.

I only use it for staying in contact with friends I rarely see anymore. I don't join any of the groups or other things you can do with it

I use it to instant message friends during summer and sometimes during term time too if there's a matter needed resolving quickly.

I don't play the silly games as a matter of principle.

I only use it to keep superficial contact with old friends I have not seen in ~4 years or more. Aside from that, I hardly touch it at all. Its just not my cup of tea.

No, I don't use Facebook. I'm connected to some other networking site (which I check four times a year) but I check my mail quite often. That should be enough for anyone who wants to contact me.

I ignore any Facebook invites.

I use it to see what is going on.

Most people I know have it and use the events part of it very frequently, so I get a nice list of what is on and who is going where before I decide what I'm doing.
Also all the bars and clubs around me put events up for who is playing that night, so if a band I like is on it will tell me.

Very handy.

Also use it to send messages to people who don't read their email inboxs.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I use it once a year to post a funny pic or quote to brighten up the lives of my miserable friends who's life somehow revolves around the site ;D

Other than that... bleh. We'd be better off without it.

You know you can block people, right?. I have done it to a few people I know. you don't have to be friends with everyone.

I use it to make sure I keep in contact with my friends. Most of the things we do are organised through facebook, so I need it to know what's going on.

Too many buttons, I got confused, one of them managed to get my number from another friend that she never met and then went and gave my number to all my other ex's.

Receiving a phone call used to be a joyful time of popularity, now I shudder when it bleeps.

I use it to keep up with what's going on. I know marginally more of the social stuff going on than before I had Facebook.

I use Facebook primarily to keep in touch with people that I don't speak to on MSN and such. The apps and games...not interested really. Plus I like to link my PS3 trophy data to it.
I just prefer it over a lot of other social sites like twitter where it seems to be essentially a life support machine i.e. giving out constant minute-to-minute readings of a person's lifestyle. Although some individuals can still be in a twitter frame of mind when posting numerous status about inane activities that interest them and noone else...oh boy heh

I've never used any social network type sites. Between my phone, email and actually seeing people every day, it seems pointless to talk to them through another medium. And I'm not convinced that people what to know everything I'm doing or thinking, I'm pretty boring.

I actually think it's pretty useful for organising events. Sure, most of its functions boil down to letting people blurt out whatever happens to be on their mind at the time, but I think the 'events' system is actually very useful.

Before I got into facebook, I would make an invitation to whatever, email it to all of my friends, wait for a week by which point only half of them have responded, chase up everyone, etc etc etc. The event system helps organise your event organising by providing a single place to see whether people are coming.

The rest of it is pretty useless, but it does sometimes act as a way of catching up with people. Plus, there's nothing like flirting with girls you know through comments on their wall posts :D
