" Duke's personality in all his games since the third game in the series, Duke Nukem 3D, has been that of a wise-cracking, hyper-masculine, egotistical, chauvinist, machismo-filled, womanizing tough guy."
From Wikipedia.
Not liking the Duke is impossible.

Uhh... Whut?

The Master Chief DOES have a backstory. You musn't have been paying much attention.
yeah,I remembered later, but if im not mistaken, the background story is not really IN the game, its in the books,or is it??Im not 100% sure..

I believe that most the hype comes from it being a classic game with a lot of old fans that are finally get a sequal, as well as, so many people that just want to know if a game that took such a long time to make will actually be worth such a wait.

As good of a game it might be(never actually played a DN game) I don't believe it will live up to it hype, except maybe in the eyes of the origanl fans.

I'm pretty sure Master Chief's back story doesn't really come through in the game, thought it is a well done background story.
the reason Chief is likened to Gordon Freeman is probobly there similarities:
they both have power suits, everyone else talks far more then they do, they both have female side-kicks, their both in the middle of crazy situations in which they are the one and only hope to save mankind and they are the only ones that seem to beable to do anything as everyone else around either dies or just isn't very helpful bar their female side-kicks.

Why do I like Duke as a character? Because he IS a character and HAS character. Very few FPSs have a main character that isn't any of the following:

- Nameless (includes relatively forgettable names)
- Faceless (either wearing an opaque helmet or the face is never shown)
- Bland in gameplay (hello Gordon Freeman, who is no different that the guys you've been killing when you play as him)

Duke is one of those characters who's name, face, and attitude are easily recognizable. The Duke Nukem series since 3D also tends to buck the formulaic trend that FPS games have taken in favor of what's fun, which is always a plus in my books.

Original Duke was before my time, but I'm as exited as hell. I just hope Duke still has his...

BALLS OF STEEL

It's such an immature franchise but everytime Duke starts to cross the line, I know I should start feeling offended, but I don't. Hell, I can be a damn feminazi a lot of the time, but capture the babe only makes me laugh. It's sort of like, "Yeah I could get mad, but what's the point?"

I am a 28 year old that has Duke Nukem 3D on my laptop right now so it really is a nostalgia thing for me. I probably won't buy it because in the intervening years I kinda of grew up and lost interest in the games. Now if I somehow have a windfall and spending $3,000 on a new High Def Big screen TV and a high end gaming rig then maybe I'll get it but otherwise I will wait till my time and my money become abundant.

Because Duke is essentially Duke.

He's the last living remnant of an age of shooters where fun triumphed over realisticness.

Hell yeah I'm getting DNF. I grew up on Duke Nukem 3D!

Dukes the original ultra badass of the FPS world. All the other ones are just meh copies.
As for Gordon and Master Chief... dull, cardboard cutout silent characters. Not interesting in the slightest. At least Duke has a friggin personality.
The other two have all the emotional depth of a tea spoon.
To say the duke is deep and emotional is blasphemy.

I wasn't going to buy this, but after Shelby Knox and FOX news made a big stink about it, I will, just to stick it to them.

I said this before in the 2012 thread, but will you please try and make your posts at least slightly less painful to read?
You've missed the entire point of Duke Nukem, you say you've never played a Duke Nukem game before and yet you're complaining about him? He's a parody! He isn't meant to be taken seriously! And games like Bulletstorm are call backs to the 90's when games like Duke Nukem weren't about the story or the realism but about the fun and the gameplay.
Now actually learn about Duke before you complain about him, and for the love of god stop using chat speak.

Master chief actually has a very in-depth backstory in the halo universe, but Duke Nukem is popular because he's a call back to the old shooters that were about fun rather than story and realism.

To be fair, Gordon Freeman's entire "backstory" is that he graduated from MIT.

That's it. His completely unexplained martial prowess is more or less attributed to better genetics, same as Duke Nukem.

I'll leave MC alone, that's too easy of a target.

Anyway this is building up like the punchline of a joke, that's why it gets so much attention. It's obviously not going to be good enough to justify the entire development cycle, but not much is after that long.

Also Duke games always put emphasis on actually playing the game, with any plot or story amounting to "kill aliens". It's increasingly rare to see that, more or less just Duke and Serious Sam do that now.

Duke Nukem is old & legendary, infact it was DOOM and DukeNukem 3D that were the great breaktroughs of FPS games in my opinion and I played them both alot when I was a kid, other than that Duke will be diffrent from most modern games, you throw your brains away and start blasting enemys with rampage and listening dukes great comments
