I'm thinking about following Islam but my friends keep telling me not to. When I ask them to give me three reasons not to, they can't think of anything. So I am essentially looking for three reasons I should not become a Muslim.
*yawnnnn*

1. Religion is stupid
2. Being islam, while living in America/UK would be substantially difficult, being a minority religion.
3. Religion is stupid

Basically, do what you want, in the end, religion is stupid.

Convert or don't convert, it's really up to you. But I suggest you do plenty of research to make sure you know exactly what you're doing, don't just convert on impulse

Can't say I agree with the religion to put it bluntly, anything in which women are regulated to 2nd tier citizens isn't my cup of tea.
In what way does Islam treat women as second class citizens? Have you ever lived in a muslim country?
I have several Muslim friends (one from Pakistan, one from Turkey, and another from Iran), and it really depends where they come from. In countries that practice fundamentalist Islamic law, women are just about as worthless as dirt. In former Taliban controlled Afghanistan a woman could be stoned for being the victim of a rape because it is assumed that they did something to deserve it (like show some skin where they shouldn't). Women are forced to cover every inch of their bodies lest they again be lashed and/or stoned for trying to seduce men around them. Women are not allowed to be eucated and usually spend most of their days at home with children and venture outside the home as little as possible.

However, in some of the more developed countries such as Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, the U.A.E., and several other countries, women are treated better, becoming educated, and allowed to dress in more Western ways. They live (in many respects) much like women in the Western world (with a few exceptoins).

So basically you want to me to empathise with christians?

I don't see the point, by the time they are adults they are either totally brainwashed and incapable of any questioning of their beliefs or clever enough to know better.
Not exactly my point, no. But maybe you'd be interested in understanding how and why someone could believe in supernatural agents more thoroughly. Daniel Dennett's a very well spoken lecturer; he's a good author as well.

Anyway, there's no sense at being angry at someone just because they have a different point of view. You just might want to save your torch and pitchfork for when they encroach on your freedoms.

Let's get this straight, I'm only angry at people who are stupid enough not to question their own beliefs, besides, I could give loads of examples of Christians trying to take away freedoms, hell, in the bible it says its alright to have a slave as long as it's from the neighbouring country.
By the way, trying to understand why someone believes something by looking at why they believe it is empathy.

Yes because you have the freedom to chose a religion that hasn't changed since its origins, infringes on women's rights, and operates more as a communist country rather than a religion.

Dont have a go at the people challenging religion, surely if someones religion is so right it can stand up to the critisism of 1 person no? Ive a few problems with religion, they are on the last post on page 3 and im to lazy to repost them, go look if you care. Do what you wish good sir, make your own rationial (or irrational if you want) decision on your life.

Dude, you're only angry at people who aren't able to question their faith and come at the "right" answer.

Empathy is putting yourself in someone else's place, wearing their hat, putting on their shoes. Think of this as a general pursuit of knowledge. Just understanding the basic mechanics. As I said, Breaking The Spell, is a recommended read. I read it in my Philosophy Ethics class, I liked it. It was "preaching to the choir" to me, as an atheist I'm not always into being told how god isn't real (I already figured that out! Gah!), but I liked it.

I'm going to ignore all the non-progressive bullshit that is Fundamentalist Islam, because like ALL FUNDAMENTALIST RELIGION it is dangerous and wrong.

But I still could never personally convert to Islam, even if I desperately needed to convert to a religion.

Mostly it's that the dogma seems to revolve to strongly around surrendering yourself to Allah's Will and that we (humanity) basically exist to glorify Allah (at least by my understanding of Islam). Frankly I'm just not that into the idea of being some divine beings plaything. Too much focus on the Will of Allah basically...

But I'm a hardcore skeptic/agnostic and I refuse to surrender my will to a being whose existance cannot (to my satisfaction) be proven.

why on Earth are you asking a mostly atheist internet community whether you should convert to one of the most controversial religions at the time? Are you just looking for views and replies? It saddens me that you are that affected by peer pressure by your friends, and need people online to give their opinion.

Like everyone else, just go the way you want to go...

Judging by your username, avatar and lack of reasons for converting to islam, you're an idiot. There are no reasons to not join a religion if you truly believe it, also you're asking us, a bunch of faceless randoms on the internet to basically bash islam.

Join islam if you want, don't join it if you don't want to.

Ok, this shouldn't be a question to be asking the random forumites at the escapist. Converting to a religion, no matter which one, should be a matter of faith. It's not like acquiring a new tattoo or a piercing. If Islam speaks to you, it makes sense to you, and it gives you a sense of connectedness to something that you truly believe to be bigger then yourself, then yeah, sign up. You could do much stupider things.

It's no secret that I'm no fan of religion, but I'd be stupid to deny the power that faith has in people. People with true faith statistically live longer, happier lives. But I would caution you in joining for any other purpose. If it's to reflect political ideas that you seem to believe in currently (I see you sporting the Che Guevara avatar), or to fit in, then I would rethink it.

1. Because it's all bullshit, allah doesn't exist

2. Islam is one of the most intolerant religions in the world

3. Islam makes woman seen "inferior"

4. Many Muslims in western countries take their dogs to be killed during Ramadan

5. Abdul Rahman was condemned to death by an Afghani court for converting to Christianity.

6. Riot over cartoons

7. Islam has no respect for freedom of speech

8. It lies about the virgin thing?
And even if it doesn?t, what the fuck are you going to do with 72 virgins anyways? I would rather have 72 whores who know how to ride the cock. Besides, you would be dead by that time, so it wouldn?t matter anyways.
Anyway if you truly want to feel in heaven Is dont think hearing 72 time would be the greatest Heaven...

You should convert because Allah beat Jesus in a game of Checkers. Clearly you want to follow the more strategically inclined creator don't you?
