Gotta ask why you want to follow it first.
Can't say I agree with the religion to put it bluntly, anything in which women are regulated to 2nd tier citizens isn't my cup of tea.
In what way does Islam treat women as second class citizens? Have you ever lived in a muslim country?
I have several Muslim friends (one from Pakistan, one from Turkey, and another from Iran), and it really depends where they come from. In countries that practice fundamentalist Islamic law, women are just about as worthless as dirt. In former Taliban controlled Afghanistan a woman could be stoned for being the
victim of a rape because it is assumed that they did something to deserve it (like show some skin where they shouldn't). Women are forced to cover every inch of their bodies lest they again be lashed and/or stoned for trying to seduce men around them. Women are not allowed to be eucated and usually spend most of their days at home with children and venture outside the home as little as possible.
However, in some of the more developed countries such as Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, the U.A.E., and several other countries, women are treated better, becoming educated, and allowed to dress in more Western ways. They live (in many respects) much like women in the Western world (with a few exceptoins).
