There are two new MMOs coming out this new year, if not even more, and im sure going to test both. But blizzard are going to release a new exspasion to wow, and as a wow player im surely going to buy it. The problem is, if blizzard is going to kepp making exspasion packs then i begin to wonder if there is ever going to be a WoW killer, or if they just should give it up?

Too many people have too much invested in WoW. I think it will take years after Blizzard stop working on it for it to die.

WoW's timing was perfect, in all honesty. Everyone was just coming off of Everquest around the time WoW made an appearance. Additionally, the big game winner in WoW is actually in it's name.

World of -Warcraft-

Warcraft is one of the many RTS that people still play and love. So its not hard to see why the near millions that played on Battle.net moved on to WoW so naturally. My answer is yes, wow will eventually lose the race. No MMO remains king forever. At that, WoW is very inviting to the uninitiated gamer, easy to pick up and play, countless hours of fun and things to do.

If Word of Warcraft is never beaten by another MMO, then that will mean that the genre as a whole will begin to stagnate. The attitude of comparing every new MMO to WoW, I fear, is the start of a trend that will end with no company even attempting to defeat the MMORPG-titan that is Acti-Blizzard.

I'd like to see a new MMO topple Blizzard's chokehold on the genre, if only so that WoW doesn't become stagnant and stale, and so that innovation continues to be brought to the genre. And, given that Bioware's latest contribution to RPGs was very well done, I have high hopes for The Old Republic. That, and maybe the potential Fallout MMO.

There was a saying in Eve Online:
"The only thing that can bring down the Band of Brothers is the Band of Brothers."

WoW will persist until Blizzard does something stupid to ruin it. If MMO devs would stop being morons and try to create something different from WoW rather than just trying to clone WoW, they'd do a lot better.

i have high hopes that that SW the old republic might be able to at least be some kind of resistance against wow. but yeah i guess people have spent a lot of hrs getting top tier characters etc. i jumped off the blizzard train and am hoping for a new mmo, also blizzard is apparently working on a new MMO with better graphics and stuff, if anything wow will be killed by blizzards new baby.

World of Warhammer is totally going to destroy WoW, er...

Aion! Is totally going to, er...

Tabula Rasa! Its like WoW, but with guns and... er...

Star Wars Galaxies! YOU CAN HAVE A HOUSE!

Archlord! Theres a wow killer!

How about Dark Ages of Camelot-- that will take WoW and smite er...

err....

WoW is not just an MMORPG... it is an institution. The amount of tested content in WoW is too large for a "wowkiller" to just come up out of nowhere and dethrone it, it would take a 500 million dollar investment and, likely, years to actually do that.

And thats assuming blizzard is just going to stop updating their game. If wow ever got really threatened, they could go a long way with price cuts.

I'm just sitting here dreaming of a Sporehammer 40k, a detached procedural 4x-esque warhammer simulator that runs on the spore galaxy engine.

Someday, yes. But they need some fresh idea that makes them stand out as a different beast entirely. An MMO is a commitment, not some adventure you complete in 6 hours. EVE Online may have the right idea, but only for more hardcore players. If they made some MMO that broke every mold and assumed nothing, and mostly, was actually FUN, then it may steal players.
It would also need to coincide with some horrible patch to WoW, like say making machinima illegal, or severely underpowering everyone's favorite spell.

I'm giving The Old Republic a good chance of knocking WoW's subscribers down a fair amount, but it wont pass it. Not by a mile.

To beat WoW you need to do something sufficiently different but not overly difficult that it appeals to the masses. Moving an individual from one MMO to another isn't that hard. Moving a community which is what wow is, is something more difficult because it has to appeal to the individual and all his friends so that they can go together, because I'd assume alot of people play it to play with their friends online more than any attachment to the game.
