This is a big year for bioware.

They have two HUGE projects, Mass effect 3, which fans (like me) are hoping for excellence from, and The Old Republic, which if it goes well has the potential to carve a swath through the MMO market.

These projects are huge and highly anticipated, but, there is a heavy risk.

I'll admit, even I, a huge bioware fanboy, was disappointed by how rushed Dragon age 2 felt. Enough in fact to make me nervous for ME3, which can either do as good as ME2 or better, or flop.

And the old republic could easily go the way of alot of MMO's and die quickly (APB anyone?)

Both these projects have the ability to reach or exceed expectations and make gamers cheer...

...Or they could both flop, and with 1 "Ok" title and 2 "Blah" titles, kill bioware.

Can bioware pull this off? Can they make both games absolutely awesome? Or will they mess up and kill themselves and some highly wanted games along with them?

Oh, I think we'll do just fine, thanks. I've got a front-row seat to the future and I'm liking the view.

I'm also a raging cynic that hates everything so take that how you will.

From what I've seen of the Old Republic, it is going to get snuffed out by Rift, Guild Wars 2, and, the reigning champion, WoW

Mass Effect 3 on the other hand will be awesome :D

Probably.
The bitching from Dragon Age 2 has finally stop, and now everyone is waiting for ME3, and considering how everyone loved their opening up of the series with Mass Effect 2 (Kind of hypocritical, but that's besides the point), it will sell a lot.

Plus everyone loves Star Wars, and TOR will basically be a stand in for KotOR 3, so that will sell well too (If it comes out in 2011).

As for quality? They'll probably be pretty good. I mean, if you treated Dragon Age II like its own game, and didn't expect it to be a carbon copy of Origins, it wasn't a bad game in and of itself. So I have nothing less to expect.

You should add not sure.
Cause yeah, i am a fan of BioWare.
Loved ME and ME2 and DA:O.
But after i played DA2 i started losing faith and became concerned
about how ME3 will turn out. And i hope, i really do hope that it wont be
like DA2 was and it will be more like ME (cause IMO at least it was better
as an RPG than ME2).

So yeah, at this point i cant even be sure that ME3 will be great and SWTOR
wont be. I am just unsure about how it is going to be for them.

The Old Republic has been in development for a long time, and has no doubt pulled in Bioware's best people to work on it. So it'll most likely be great.

As for Mass Effect 3, well... lets just say that after Mass Effect 2, I'm not expecting anything great plot-wise. I'm sure the writing will be good, and the characters will be interesting. But thats about all I'm expecting.

But good news? Since TOR has Bioware's best people working on it, its sure to be awesome. Hopefully. Please let it be awesome, there's no way I can pass up a game that has 8 KOTOR-length stories in one.

I doubt they'd die even if both ME3 and TOR are flops, worst case scnario: they have to down size and go back to releasing one game every few years.
Which if DA2 is any example, might not be a bad thing. (Note: I liked DA2 a lot, but it's obvious to anyone that it was a rush job.)

As for can they pull this off? I'unno, Mass Effect 3's probably gonna sell well either way, and it'll probably be highly reviewed. TOR, well, WoW is a big competitor, it'll be a tough fight for anyone seeking to take a big piece of the MMO pie.

From what I've read they really don't know what exactly they want to do with TOR, some critics who tested a beta version said it was trying too hard to be single as well as multiplayer at the same time. That might just be those critics holding on to their conservative beliefs or BioWare really doesn't know where to go with it.

I'm not worried though, I'm pretty positive I'm going to love it either way.

As for Mass Effect 3 I'm even less worried. Yes it's the biggest release of the year but come on, they're not going to mess it up.

Well if there is a game that requires a good dethroning its WoW (Old lass' has lived long enough)

I've said it before and I'll say it again... If anyone can do it Bioware can.
Thats what i tell myself but DA2 has made me cautious.

I don't know.

I think TOR will sink, ME3 will swim, and DA2 has already
Sadly i see this as very possible, i hope TOR knocks me off my feet but i dont know. ME3 will at least do well though.

You're also a BioWare employee, which kind of disqualifies the second part of your answer xD

[sub]And if you really really are a BioWare employee, can you please join the TOR group and tell us everything - we promise not to tell anyone else what you've said![/sub]

Bear in mind that Mass Effect 2 had the *****-position of being the second in a trilogy. Its main purpose was to really add to the overall picture (which I thought it did very well), as opposed to pound the main narrative along a boat-load.

Also, every class has 3 KotOR-length stories, doesn't it? So isn't that like 24 KotORs?

OT: Personally, I too was disappointed with Dragon Age 2, although I do feel that my biggest gripes with the game were because they did something different with the game's structure. Having said that, my very biggest gripe with the game - that a number of major 'decisions' cannot be affected by me whatsoever - did seem to be born from rushing.

Still, I am really looking forward to TOR, and the project lead for the Mass Effect games was also the project lead for KotOR, so I can't say I'm exactly worried. Bear in mind that as series go on, the development times naturally get shorter.

And ME3 will be awesome, cuz y'know it's ME3

[sub]Damn my decison to go dark on the ME3 front...[/sub]

I hope they fail. After playing the rushed pile of steaming dog-shit that was Dragon Age 2 and seeing how easy it is to satisfy the vast majority of the people, I hope they fail hard.

UNLESS Mass Effect 3 and all their other upcoming games won't be rushed and will actually have some sort of depth to them, meaning they're not going to be increasingly catering to the lowest common denominator.

Will they fail though? Nope.
How evil. Mass effect 3 has been in work for a few years, and TOR for even longer.

I understand your disappointment but don't hate a company (that has, before DA2, never made a bad game) As shit, all companies have hiccups

Honestly i wouldn't have minded if they made TOR a single player game, but hey its their money.

to be perfectly fair DA2 was in no way a bad game just a bad game for bioware.(yes it was rushed but not to the point that it wasnt fun)
OT: i think they will pull it off for a few reasons;
1. ME3 has been under development for a long time they started on it 6 months before ME2 hit store shelves.
2. different team then the one that does dragon age.
3. TOR is garentied to take out rift as its a better MMO(yes i have played rift its wow with better graphics and none of the lore)
4. Its bioware guys even if you didnt like DA2 it was still better then most games that get released so be calm and trust in them.

I hope Bioware realizes they have come to be known as reliable in a lot of their fans eyes. I liked DA2, even though its not as good as origins that's because it got the middle position in what I'm assuming is a trilogy, like ME. But anyways I'm sure that they don't want to lose that reliable title escpecially at the climactic ending of one of their trilogies(ME) and one of their longest awaited projects.

DA2 isn't a failure because of anything other than a conscious decision. I can understand a game going too far in one direction or another in an attempt to achieve something and failing, I can respect that. This is not the case here. You don't just "mistakenly" rush a game to cash in on the audience. The only hiccup in this was that people saw through their bullshit and started making a fuss.
So? Again, flawless record and one mistake.
