No. How many 9 year olds do you know that are buying it... not a whole lot. Nostalgia property is random and capricious.

Skyrim will be this generations Skyrim.

OoT was that generations OoT.

Don't oversell games... Ocarina of Time was a fun game but it isn't the world beating classic people hype it up to be.

I 100% completed it (100 skulltullas, 20 hearts, Hylian loach etc.) with no guides and I still don't think its a better game than many others.

Don't make pointless comparisons. It hurts games.

Yeah, and it makes me wonder why people call out Call of Duty as 'formulaic' while simultaneously enjoying games like Oblivion...
Then aren't all games "formulaic" when you really break it down? I figure it has something to do with the TES formula being rather deep and complex while the CoD formula is shallow (aside from story elements). Not to say this makes CoD any less enjoyable but fact is that a game like TES V has had a lot more production time+resources.

Will Skyrim be a masterpiece like OoC? Probably not. Gaming has diversified itself so much now. Everyone has found their very own select preference of games, Skyrim is trying really hard to reach everyone and in the process depth of the orinigal RPG experience has to be sacrificed. Maybe we'll remember Skyrim as the game that pleased everyone (stealth, story, shooter, rpg fans, etc) but did not quite excell in any one area.

Woah, woah, let's not get too excited. I'm sure Skyrim will be a great game, but I see no reason to assume it will change gaming forever.

Personally I think a big element of the difference between Elder Scrolls and CoD or Bf is that Elder Scrolls has to focus mainly on its single player campaign so the experience can be much tighter and well defined while still having to offer freedom and is less of a multiplayer unscripted experience like CoD is.

No.

Ocarina became what it did because of a lot of factors, one of the biggest being audience.

There are a lot more people gaming now, and a good number of them don't like RPGs. Those that do are divided into the Linear (but good story) vs. Openworld (but less structured narrative) camps.

Personally, I'm a huge Elder Scrolls fan, and I think the game is going to be great. However, not everyone is going to feel that way. That's fine as far as I'm concerned. To each their own, and all that.

The title says it all, me I think fuck yes because ideally it'll actually be an RPG instead of just some cheap ass fantasy adventure game will completely alter the template from which everyone draws.
I don't understand the reference. What was last generations Ocarina of Time? If Skyrim was this generation's, would that be good or bad?

Nope it won't. It'll be a brilliant game, no doubt about that. But it won't be such a momentous event in gaming like OoT was. It's not really changing up how the RPG is being done in a massive way. It's just taking away class restrictions. And it's not the first RPG to do that. What they are doing is making an already awesome game much better. OoT was was different. It was the first 3D Zelda, so really defined what a 3D Zelda was, and it was early on in 3D gaming, so it helped to define what all 3D gaming was about. People were amazed at having such a huge 3D world and the scope of the game in general. It did't just redefine a genre, it redefined games as a whole. We won't get something like that in this generation. There needs to be a significant leap in technology which means the whole medium has to be re-thought. And even if we did have something like it it would have been released far earlier in the production cycle.

While I expect Skyrim to be awesome, that is a bold prediction. Going by its few reviews, Skyward Sword will be the Ocarina of Time of this generation.

Nah I don't think it will be a craphole, I think it'll be good. If they'd just remove the giant spiders it'd be excellent.

It will hopefully improve upon its predecessor and create a unique environment for us to explore...but I simply can't see it transcending its genre and becoming as memetic as Ocarina. It may will prove to be my favorite game, though D

Although I'm sure this like many of my previous comments will be ignored from what people have said here it seems to me that this generations Ocarina of Time is Angry Birds
