No! Arseholes ruining something perfectly good! This is ridiculous. Preposterous. If the Escapist fared so well without subscriptions, why should it need it now? Seriously, this pisses me off. Things that could be given to everyone just for free, like high quality and sneak peak things, but they're just making you pay.

"Shameless capitalism." Really? You sound like a parody, so I hope you're joking. Bandwidth for people to access higher quality videos costs money, our lovely reporters and columnists need to get paid. They're not doing it to be malicious or greedy. If they don't find a way to make more money, there can't be an Escapist as we know it.

But with this way of making money, the Escapist will also cease to exist as we know it. I hope to be proved wrong, but I think this won't be a good thing for the Escapist.

Already have. I've been here so long I feel that I owe them something for all the free entertainment I've received. Plus iPhone videos and podcasts are something I'd really find useful. I mean $10 not bad at all.

Sounds like a good idea, but when I look into it it's pointless to me.

Behind-the-scenes content is something that I watch when I'm bored, not something I pay for. HD videos are pointless to me because the normal def videos take long enough to load for me. I don't know what's wrong with the current RSS feed to warrant a special one. And what's cool about a custom title if everyone's got one?

Not to say it's a bad idea. I can see someone enjoying it and be willing to pay for it. Just not me.

I'm not against it, I realize things like HD video costs the company extra, but I can't help feeling I'm being extorted.

Besides, I'd have a hard time putting money on the escapist with some of the stuff around here... It's slowly looking like it's making a direction shift from the good'ol Escapist I signed up for to Gamespot. It's not just one thing, but stuff like tacking on arbitrary scores at the end of reviews and such... I disapprove.

I'm not leaving because of this, but I don't see myself staying for the ride considering the direction Alex seems to imply it's heading in his post...

The exclusive member-only forum is really whats attracting me, but also because I want to support The Escapist.

I've already joined. To say it was half price at $10. To me that's round about £6.69 so pocket change really for a years subscription.

Most likely not. HD quality videos are nice, but I don't exactly have trouble watching the regular quality, its better than most of the 'high quality video' you can find on YouTube. Even if I wanted to sign up, chances are I couldn't because I'm always spending money.

Call me tight if you will, but HD videos and custom titles aren't that much of an incentive for me to sign up.

I can understand why they're doing it so I won't leave the site over it (or even complain about it), but I can't see myself ever paying for it.

Same, I don't think any of the benefits are really all that great and I don't like paying to join clubs on the internet.

As can be seen from my join date I've been around for a while and have spent an ungodly amount of time on this site.
I've signed up with nary a doubtful thought about it. I don't mind giving a bit for neigh on 2½ years of entertainment.

Also, after the fact I must admit that had I known beforehand I would have paid the price of admission just to get articles shown on one page.

That being said, I'll review my decision in a year and see if I want to keep it up.

I won't be leaving, but this has knocked my opinion of the Escapist down a peg or two. The moment Premium Users get access to anything the Free Users don't, I will be out of here.

Most of the stuff seems pretty awesome and it's a reasonable price for a yearly subscription. The podcasts of the shows will be a nice feature to make use of as I already do that for Rebecca Mayes.
