Just did. Since this site is my homepage, I don't mind supporting them to be honest and at 10 dollars for this first year, which is under 1 dollar a month, I don't have much of a problem with it.

I've been here for a long enough time to recognize something that will actually help the site.

I might. It's only $10, and that's honestly not as bad as a lot of people are acting. It doesn't really sound like I'd be getting $10 worth of extras, but at the same time, it's just $10. I know on another site, you have to pay $10 anytime you want to get a custom title, or even just change your user avatar, or to even just make an account.

I dunno. I'll probably just panic and sign up later tonight.

Things that could be given to everyone just for free, like high quality and sneak peak things, but they're just making you pay.

I don't really think you can credibly argue this will cause elitism in the community.

It's not like I'm going to look down on you all because you don't have custom titles. I'm not thick enough to think I'm better than you because I have a Credit Card and $10 to spare, and anyone that does so is a complete moron and doesn't have a leg to stand on anyway.

Guys, just to reiterate: People who don't join the Publisher's Club will get the exact same Escapist-quality experience you've always gotten. It's just that some of the features we wanted to add (like high-quality video) are pretty time and resource intensive, and so that was the main benefit we're trying to offer here.

We will never NOT be developing the bulk of our content for everybody, as we've done before. This just lets us go a bit above and beyond for the people who help us keep the lights on

If it helps, think of it as us selling out - but to you guys ;P

It's not the "paying extra for extra content" that I object too, it's the inevitable divide that having personal titles etc... will create on the forums.

I imagine there will be much "Your opinion doesn't count for shit because you aren't premium" sentiment.

I hate forum sites with a divide between the "Paid-up-with-a-shiny-badge" Elite and the common plebs. I think it will do horrible things to the Escapist community.

Now that I think about this it might end up like The Simpsons episode : A Tale Of Two Springfields. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Tale_of_Two_Springfields

In the episode they split the town into two different area codes. Like (almost) escapist gets split into people who can pay and people that can't pay (or don't want to pay). Long Story Short, what ever happens in the end The Who will save us.

I don't think anyone in the current crop of Escapists will, it'll be the new members in the coming years after it has been implemented that see it as a mark of superiority.

"Shameless capitalism." Really? You sound like a parody, so I hope you're joking. Bandwidth for people to access higher quality videos costs money, our lovely reporters and columnists need to get paid. They're not doing it to be malicious or greedy. If they don't find a way to make more money, there can't be an Escapist as we know it.
