If you are a fan of Valve (which I am) you know that they prefer to aim towards the PC gamer (Steam being the most obvious example). The chances of Valve ever releasing a console are slim to none, but if they did decided to give the console market their input, would you be interested enough to buy it? (For the sake of this thread, let's say that there's a fairly interesting line-up of games, and a price tag of, say, $300)

What the console could do would be one of the big decision making factors. I mean, just saying it's Valve-made doesn't tell me much about it.

I also think that $250-$400 price range is a big. $150 is quite a large gap when we're talking about a gaming console.

I'd be interested, sure, but I'd need far more information before considering buying it.

Plus, there's always "Valve Time" to consider... :p

It'd depend on the competing consoles and whether it'd be only for Valve games. A console based around a Steam-like digital distribution service focusing on a smallish number of companies and indie game releases sounds like a good idea, but the price point would be a major factor there.

It's called a PC.

[sub]On a less silly note, Valve has 260 employees. How, what, where? They wouldn't benefit from expanding into a completely different market, and they wouldn't have the power to pull in AAA developers for exclusives. Way too risky.[/sub]

I changed it to $300. I really don't know what's a good price. I remember the Wii launched at 200, and a quick google said the PS3 launched at 450 or 500, something like that.

Considering "Valve Time" I'd probably be dead or close to it by the time one was actually released.

If Steam is anything to go by, it will crash constantly, and every update will break more things than it fixes. So no, probably not.

I'd give it the same rule I give every console: It must have at least a dozen games I want for it.

No, I've had way too many headaches with them recently, and a company that is the main digital distributor that doesn't have phone support and a 2-3 day turn around time per question/response to question is absolutely ridiculous. And the response usually completely ignores the crux of your problem and you just get a generic copy and paste from their FAQs.

I would say no.
As good as most Valve games are, I do not worship the company, and would therefore be skeptical about buying a console from them, especially since they are in-experienced in that aspect.

It would split the Valve fanbase, with most of the bitching and fanboy praise coming from this site. Imaging if Valve, probably the biggest dev who makes games almost exclusively for PC (and this site's GOD) not only put more emphasis on consoles... but MADE a console. The results would be catastrophic... and hilarious to watch.

PC Gamers would cry out "VALVE SOLD OUT! VALVE BETRAYED US!", Valve fanboys would cry out "YAY! THE VALVE (NAME) IS THE BEST CONSOLE EVER! FUCK ALL OTHER CONSOLES! VALVE RULES!", and the other console fanboys... well, they'd keep doing what they're doing right now, but spend about a month going "THE VALVE (NAME) IS GAAAAAAY!", then go back to insulting all the other consoles.

OT: Would I get it? Depends. This gen? No. No real reason. Considering the new Nintendo console will probably have issues next gen with the strange controller, and all other things considered, Valve making a console would probably still be better than anything Sony and Microsoft put out there... plus, it'd essentially be Steam, but in console form, meaning it's OnLive, but it DOESN'T suck.

You're kidding right? You do know that "console" refers to those things you hook up to your tv?
I am, hence the "on a less silly note" thing underneath it.

That said, you can hook your PC up to a TV.

[sub]EDIT: Or did I edit that in after you clicked quote? If so, my apologies. Didn't expect it to get taken at face value, but I added the extra note after realizing it probably would.[/sub]

You ripped my thoughts from my head and posted them.

Really depends on what the console can do and the games it's got lined up. However, when i think of this i think of my x box + steam. in which case that would be frikkin awesome.

What, you've never hooked a PC up to a TV before?

What rock have you been hiding under. ;p

In all seriousness though, I don't really see what would be gained by valve making a console.
It just seems like a really strange move for a company like valve to make.

It's a joke. Jokes shouldn't be taken literally.

OT: Only if it had exclusives I wanted, but being Valve, everything for it would probably also be on Steam for PC.

I agree mostly with what Marter says. Also, Marter, one question. Who is that in your avatar? I feel certain I recognise her from somewhere but can't quite place it... she's not one of the girls in the band Warpaint, is she?

Anyway, as I say, I agree pretty much with Marter's post. I'd be intrigued, certainly, but would really need some more info and would need to see what else the console had to offer before making a decision. What are the games? What's the internet like? How good are the graphics and processing? What's the UI interface like in general? Can I save movies and songs on it? That sort of thing is important to me. Just slapping Valve's name and brand on there won't make me buy it, Valve fanboy though I may be... :p
