It's called a PC.
You're kidding right? You do know that "console" refers to those things you hook up to your tv?
So if I hook my PC up to a TV it's a console? Cause I do that.

I would not buy a console by Valve. I got a PC, and well, I can upgrade my PC, purchasing a console by Valve would support the style of not being able tio improve the graphics because consoles are keeping them back. You can only get so much from a PS3 or a 360, but a PC will be capable of far more. If Valve jumps on the bandwagon it will jsut help keeping the technology back. A big fat no here. I wont buy it and I don't want to see it released.

Maybe? I dunno, they have absolutely no experience in putting out hardware in the form of consoles... or anything that I know of.

If Steam is anything to go by, it will crash constantly, and every update will break more things than it fixes. So no, probably not.
I've only heard from, in forums such as this, a rare few people complaining about steam and out of the shitloads of people i know face-to-face instead of digitally, none of the ones that have used steam have complained.

Anyways on to the question. This is a theoretical question but you have to be realistic if you want to answer it properly. Valve aren't a bunch of idiots. They would make sure they had all the required knowledge and resources to create a console, and they'd only attempt to create one at a time it would benefit them. Like when the next gen of consoles is rolling around but all the big players haven't put anything on the table.

So basically they'd have everything they need to make a good console with the Valve touch, aka long wait times but a good product in the end.

Console lovers could just get a console controller that plugs into their computer but i guess its cheaper to buy a console than a computer setup... Even though consoles only play games and computers do a hell of a lot more.

I voted maybe, because as a hardware-oriented geek, I reserve my tech purchases until after I know every specification available on a given machine. I didn't buy a PS3 until I had researched what CPU, GPU, and memory it was using, what sort of internal cooling it had going on (insufficient, by the way... first thing I fixed on it), and what sort of input-output capabilities it had.

I would do the same with this hypothetical Valve system you invented.

My vote is maybe, but for reasons of VALVe-fanboyism and philosophy on my part.

I should vote yes, but Valve will never create a console. "Yes" as an answer meaning "never be a console" would be silly.

I fully admit that I am a PC elitist, and VALVe (Steam!) is a good part of the reason why. Because of my library of Steam games, I can play a lot of good games that are console ports. Every one of them would be so much better if it were coded for PC. Sure I can play Batman:AA on PC, but despite the ability to rotate with the mouse, the core 4 directions of console gameplay are there. And 'dodgy' camera. Very Annoying.

Probably no. I love Valve titles, but their line of games are first-person-shooters, which I cannot play on a console. I just can't. So I'd stick to the computer. But that would be something, huh? Making a console, then releasing their news games only for that console. I'd have to fork up the money for that thing if I wanted to play Valve anymore. D=

Well... maybe
I'd wait to see some opinions as a Valve console would either be an amazing, beautiful creation, or a massive pile of rotting rodent corpses.
Either way it'd be interesting.

Why would valve want to make a console when its core demographic are PC gamers who dislike consoles? I understand this is hypothetical and all, but as a fan of valve and PC gaming I'd say that if Valve chose to make a console I would be worried. They are one of the few game developers who really seem to cater to the PC crowd, and do so very effectively. If they made a console It'd just seem like they're seriously selling out.
That's just my opinion however, so no flame wars please.
PC has a shit ton of Dev's that make PC only games, more than console only exclusives go check it out, so if Valve jumped ship I still wouldn't care.

Woo! A fellow laptop gamer! Sure it can be challenging, but it is nice to be able to carry around my entire library of PC games in the form of a back pack or satchel that can double as a book bag.
really in the current state of things if youre luckey enough to have a laptop capable of running current games its a very good setup (especially since I somtimes have to travel a bit)

I mean Id go out on a limb and say right now its not exactally worth having a monster rig

and if it wasnt portability I might as well get a console since thats where things are focused I do still love PC gaming though

Yeah, Valve has never steered me wrong before. Although the console would take 300 years to make and that is a date set before people heard that it was being cancelled, for the first time of many.

Short answer: no.
Long answer: are we talking onlive-style console? where one could play the same games on both your PC AND TV? That I would love to buy.

If it's by Valve, the games would be out on PC as well anyway so there's really no reason for me to buy it :/

why would valve do something so monumentally stupid. They get to release just about every game from every console on steam. They are making hundreds of millions off it. And it constantly gets upgraded as PC specs migrate upwards. It's 1000000x better then a console.

However if we are talking hand held. I'd be interested, have to see what it could do though

It would run faster and be funnier and synch with Steam out of the box, but we all know it'd become vaporware by nature of us wanting it out. Also, sound would come from everything but the games and it'd be light as styrofoam.

I watched the Portal 2 Co-op trailer again yesterday (too poor to buy it) and realised that Valve is so good at game design, they can take non-existant robots, environments and concepts like companioncubes look so realistic and believable... they are probably the best company out there at the moment.

So, yeah, I'm pretty much going to buy everything they put out.

I was going to say that this was a silly question seeing as reasoning that "Valve would make a good console because they make good games" is like saying "a baker might be good at building an oven because he makes good cakes".

But, hypothetically if they did, I imagine they'd do a decent job. They once tried to make a movie about half life, getting outside specialists and putting a lot effort into it but decided that if they made it, it wouldn't be of valve standard.

They don't release anything unless they know it's top quality. So yeah, I guess like 20 years from now if Extra Credits is wrong and consoles still exist and Valve made a decent quality one. But PC would still probably be their main platform anyway.
