I have a family. I'm also relatively gimped (car accident about 15 years back). If it came down to defending them, I'd be the first to be raiding the local Wally World and sporting goods store for 12ga & 20ga for the late father-in-law's old riot gun and over-under. I don't keep rounds in the house with having two kids. (They're my spawn, and I know how much trouble I'd have gotten into if I'd found a weapon in the house at their age or older.) Heck, Joe never kept ammo for them, either. The old riot was for 'auditory deterence' when he was on the road back in the eighties. Nothing says "Back the f*ck up from the RV" like the *k'chak-chak* (he had a pair of solid shot shells, sans powder, to complete the effect, or so he told the story) of a pump action being cycled.
But it would all come down to them... If we're talking full-on, World in Conflict / Homefront invasion, then my first thought would be either running, or compliance. If it was a civil coop, then it'd be more between running, or boarding up and getting to know my neighbors a lot more closely. As it is, I can't make a choice without better situation awareness.
It's like the question posed in my Philosophy class: "So, a man with a gun comes into your home..."
There were varying immediate replies from "take him out" to "give him what he wants". My response: "Is it a cop?"
