It would depend. All too often the minority card is played for controversy and as a gimmick. If the homosexuality was simply another dynamic of his personality then sure but if it's an ostentatious display, as is most likely, then no thanks.
I think this sums it up for me. While I wouldn't mind playing a game where there were homosexual references or, say, the main character saved/returned to their partner and there was mild homosexual imagery.

But I think I would feel slightly less comfortable if the character's homosexuality was a key feature to the plot or the gameplay. With these kinds of things you end up being extremely controversial and while my ex-girlfriend and I did go on double dates with our homosexual friends and felt comfortable, centralling a game around one, where in effect you 'are' the character, it would make me slightly uncomfortable.

Does it make them an any more likeable/unlikeable character? No. I couldn't really care about their sexuality.

Sure, I'd just shield my eyes for the more intimate parts... oh, and the game has to be good.

I already have, Hana in the PS1 game Fear Effect was a lesbian.

More generally though, it very much depends on how it is handled. If it's discriminating or gratuitous, it's not really going to appeal to me, but if it's done tastefully, I'd be more than happy to play a character that wasn't heterosexual.

We put a lot of time and effort into discussing strong female characters but there are a lot of other groups that aren't well represented in gaming, and the LBGT community is just one of them.

EDIT: It's heartening to see how many people voted 'Yes to Both'. I'm very proud of you right :)

Is it like...Brokeback Mountain: The Game?

I don't think I'd care really...so long as the main objective wasn't a quest for Penis.

What? why does this even matter?

The only reason for a character to be gay is if the player makes them gay or if them being gay has heavy significance towards the plot.

Otherwise their sexuality is hardly an issue. Master Chief could be gay and it wouldn't make a difference.
It would to most of the Xbox 360 players. they are those macho-tards that would be devastated by this!
But more towards the point, it doesn't matter, and it shouldn't.

I really want to be annoyed that someone even asked this, but the sad fact is that some people honestly would avoid a game if they knew the main character was gay.

Grow up.
Kind of why I posed the question...

Any who I want the first game to feature a gay male in the horror genre.

If the character wasn't some major stereotype, and actually characterised in a thoughtful way then I can't see how it'd affect gameplay.
As long as it wasn't being used as controversy-bait, I'd have no problem with it.

Yes to both. I could give two hoots as to the sexual orientation of the main character.

depends if the gameplay is based around the fact that the guy is a homosexual, then it would probably be lame ass. an analogy...

"the life of a homosexual" - SOUNDS LAME
"the life of a homosexual ninja pirate" - sounds awesomesauce.

if it is about a lesbian though its bound to be more sexy... I mean interesting...

"the life of a lesbian ninja pirate" - I jizzed in my pants.

If a game were to be developed like that, they would have to make it obvious, or a plot point, that the character is gay, or else you wouldn't know. Now, I certainly don't want to sit through lisping, rainbows, techno, fashion, or anything of that sort. If the made the character gay, there should just be like a simple love interest story, I guess that would be ok. I still wouldn't play it though.
