also, i imagined an entire line of riot cops holding hands and cloths lining a bunch of protesters, it HAS to happen now.
You could turn it into a giant game of red rover!

No, because I live in a democracy and for a democracy to actually work there is a necesity for freedom for political protest. under protests the police should focus on preventing damage on people (prostesters and bystanders alike independent of political view) and property.
If however the protest would go out of hand it would depend on the situation. Racism, and personal injury should be fined on the organiser of the protest. If the protestors where breaking the law then they should be arrested. Only when protestors are actually in the act of comitting violence should force be used, and then no more than necesary to arrest them.

If you're an american, your entire country exists SOLELY because of political protest. You also have written the right to protest the government in your constitution. Not only do you have the right to free speech, you have the right to bear arms against an injust government and form a militia.

So, if you answered 'Yes I would' for -any reason-, and you are an American, you fail history.

I'm Canadian, mind you. But we're generally cool with protesters up here, because how else do problems get solved other than by people pointing them out?

It's a fairly serious topic tho.

Also, Tazers can kill, why would you tazer protesters? (Barring them being violent to other citizens) What crime are they commiting? Speaking out? Maybe they have a good reason. And you know what? Maybe they don't, but they still have the right to do so and look like an idiot.

You need to ensure that:
(1) the chain of command is moral, culpable and accountable (democratic representatives also key)
(2) the boots and guns on the ground are loyal and controllable.
It's simplistic, but I don't believe any of that is possible. Ever. In any large organization, it only takes one individual somewhere along the line to fuck the whole thing up. I was in the army briefly. Plenty of shady motherfuckers abound.

One of my drill sergeants interrogated me once. He thought I was an undercover internal affairs agent. It was priceless.

"I don't know what you're talking about." I'd said.
"That's what you would say." He said.

He went on informing me of all the various laws and codes I would be in breach of if I did not reveal myself as a CID agent.

I wasn't CID. I just didn't like him choking out kids in front of me and had told him to knock it the fuck off on more than one occasion. The last straw was when one private busted another private's ear drum after kicking him in the head after he was down. They had been fighting.

The drill sergeant told the guy with the blown ear drum that he fell down.

I happened to run into a colonel and told him all about it. I was out of the army the next day. The private insisted he fell.

Fuck it. Glad I didn't stay. Then 9/11 happened. Double glad.
Sounds like a shit life for a soldier... I hate to say it but a lot of those cruel and stupid methods and scenarios do seem to be doing to job of making loyal soldiers in a military hierarchy.

I've heard stories from armies all over the world of covering up of soldiers fighting and it seems it is an unwritten rule to cover-up minor incidents to preserve the "esprit de corps" as it is known, a vital component in maintaining a cohesive and orderly military unit. And yeah, busted eardrum is minor compared to something like, I don't know, getting shot.

And the same rough principals apply for a police force, of course civilian laws enforcement has to have a much more benign approach to problems but still the same standards of discipline and order should apply.

Ever considered police work? I hear it pays REALLY well in the USA, better than a Doctor, especially considering the pensions. WHOAAA, I was amazed to learn what they earn.

What are they protesting? I mean, if it's tea or something, good on them.

But if it's something I dislike, I'm opening fire. Oppression incarnate! fuck yeah!
Then again, I don't like much.

If I was police and was told to deploy non-lethal weapons to maintain public order I wouldn't be bothered by it.

Might be more conflicted if serious shit was going down and it seemed like the government would be overthrown though, but I'd know whoose side I was on.

Depends on the situation, I wouldn't have any qualms about using live ammunition against hooligan riots but something that wasn't utter bullshit like people using their right to freedom of speech I would be more likely to disobey.
