I wouldn't be in the police anyway but it really depends on what the protest is about and if they're rioting and getting violent. If they're getting violent and I've got no choice I'd probably shoot however if they're just a peaceful protest and not really bothering anyway I would refuse that order and leave the force immediatelly.
The problem arises, for me at least, when groups like the Westboro's Baptist Church protest because I would find it extremely hard for me not to want shoot them for their ignorance and lack of regard for others. In that situation I'm sad to say I probably would be a bit too trigger happy which really means that for me (And maybe others) the line of thinking would be "Do I agree with what they're protesting on? I don't? Oh, then it's fair game right?" which kind of kills the whole idea of freedom of speech. Because if I can think that what's stopping other police from thinking that? Your commanding officer? The government?
