well im not a completionist at all, so the whole 100 % thing never crossed my mind, usually i use a guide if im completely fucking lost beyond belief (such as a ff game) or if i haven't played the game for a while and it doesn't give me any reminders about what im supposed to be doing. usually i do a blind runthrough for the most part on my first playthroughs, then i see on forums big stuff i might have missed and i check the guide to see if they are worth the hassle to go and face off or get.

Have you ever played Painkiller? I cannot believe that anyone would be able to get through that game, and get all the tarot cards, without using a guide of some sort. Even with a guide some levels still took me a hour or so (Icy Bridge, City on the Water)...

Yes, I would. I used a guide to gather all the collectibles in Assassin's Creed 2 after I finished the story. I don't have the patience required to find all these tiny little things by myself. Hell, finding them with a guide was hard enough. Without it, I would probably have given up before I had even cleared a single district.

[sub]Too bad I still didn't get that platinum trophy... The game decided to for some reason not award me one of the story trophies.[/sub]

I used the Fallout New Vegas Guide almost exclusivley to find weapon repair kits for one semi-rare weapon I was too cheap to buy extras for, but after about 40 hours i used it to hunt down secret weapons and wild wasteland encounters, so I guess I use guides for finding bonus content.

Well sometimes you need a guide, or at least a map, to help you get all of those feathers and flags in Assassin's Creed.

I use guides from time to time but usually only after a blind run through, and I never use them for strategies or tips on how to beat a boss. But on a few games when a side mission requires a gigantic scavenger hunt I try to find a general map of where the things i need to find appear online. I never saw the point of only using the guide's strategy of the guide choices because I always like testing my mind and skills.

Only if you have to find certain items or secrets.

I know I used a guide to find all the gold and collectibles in Bad Company 1.

Yeah, suppose I would. Initially, I play the game myself, and tend to get the majority done that way. However, if there's a particularly persistent secret or challenge within the game, I'll check a guide.

I only resort to guides (in any context) when all else fails, and I'll only turn to a guide to find collectibles when there's some in game benefit or unlock for finding them (such as Assassin Creed 2's feathers or Call of Duty 4's intel) and once I've gotten fed up trying to find them for hours at a time. I don't like following guides, because it feels much less like I'm playing the game and more like I'm just following instructions, but the allure of a tasty unlockable goodie is too much to resist.

It doesn't really matter to me about using a guide to find pain-in-the-ass hidden treasures, like the fucking feathers or pigeons in AC2 and GTA4 respectively.

I've started getting more and more into completing games to 100%, but I have to go back over so many to do that... but its more of an OCD thing. I like lists and checkboxes being completed and I like the feeling of accomplishment.

I would use a guide if it was helpful to the cause! If its not that much of an interesting game I probaby wouldn't do it but with the ones I really enjoy it is definitely me sat down with the guide sometimes trying to get it right. I occasionally do one blind run if I know its a relatively short game, if its huge then I try and get as much right as poss during the main storyline/gameplay and then go back to get the rest if poss.

I'll play through; but after i play to the point where i can't possibly do anything else in my power or imagination; I'll grab a guide, and then get the 100%. if it's worth it

Generally no. I don't see it as cheating, however. I mean, there is content in some games that you would have no idea how to do without using a guide.

I do, however, use the wikis sometimes, like Vault Wiki for Fallout. Though, this is mainly to read up on lore.

I usually don't bother unless I'm horribly stuck. I like exploring and such.
Yeah, I'm an explorer type, too. Nevertheless, I could see myself using a strategy guide if the game was just massive and there was a good chance I'd miss out on a lot of stuff.

Look at it this way. I bought the Final Fantasy XII walkthrough before I even bought the game itself (great game, by the way :D). Though to be fair, that was only because it was a limited edition version that I saw and didn't want to miss my opportunity to get. Every time I see something limited edition or special edition, I always leave it and then it's already been bought next time I go to that same shop, I missed a cheap (£18) version of the Extended Edition of the LOTR trilogy DVD box-set at CEX that way. It's £27 for the exact same thing in HMV... :(.

Anyway, for some games I do, things like JRPGs and other things where there's a hell of a lot of content that's all off the beaten path and tough to find. Otherwise, I prefer doing blind runs as I naturally would, and simply using online walkthroughs in cases where I am hopelessly stuck...

Just a curious question i thought i'd make into a poll; do or would you use a walkthrough to achieve 100% in a game? This extends only to games that have an extensive amount of collectibles. If not, would you use the guide to achieve 100% if it meant you would get bonus content or a secret ending?

I'm asking this as i'm playing Metroid Prime Trilogy on my wii at the moment (love these games) and having just played through Prime 1 blind i managed to scoop up nearly everything, but missed a scan from a boss that's now gone forever. Now that left me real frustrated. I decided to play it blind since i had already played it on gamecube and figured i'd remember most of the stuff, and i wanted the secret ending / bonus stuff unlocked, hence why i started with Prime 1 first - but i digress.

In order to prevent the "locked out from 100%" thing in Prime 2 and later Prime 3, i'm planning on following a guide so i don't miss anything / any collectibles in my lofty goal to achieve 100%. However i still feel slightly bothered by it, that i'm cheating or detracting from the experience. It should be noted i haven't actually played Prime 2 or 3 yet prior to buying the trilogy.

TL;DR Version: Would you use a guide to achieve 100%? If not, would you do it for bonus content? If you wouldn't do it at all, why not?
Well... the only time I've ever used a guide for a game...

Was when I got stuck in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (HOW THE HECK WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW CROUCH IN THE CORNER WITH THE RED ORB EQUIPPED!?!?)
