I use a guide to sweep up tiny little things that I otherwise miss even after a massive sweep of the levels. Metroid is a good example of this. Batman AA and Burnout I did all on my lonesome though. Although, in Burnout I still need to finish online, but you know, one step at a time.

Never. It's as simple as that.

I like to play the game myself, instead of reading what I'm supposed to be doing.

I can imagine someone using guides for if they got really, really stuck somewhere and they never could figure out what to do. Otherwise, I find it to be pathetic.

No. I never use guides full stop
It takes away the sense of merit you get when that trophy/achievement pops up and makes it seem, just, hollow

People who use guides usually just use them to get all hidden collectibles and thats what pisses me off. Developers put all that time and effort in hiding them, just for someone to use a guide and "find" them
My friend does this all the time yet has the nerve to call himself "a true gamer". Ive told him many a time that if he is what he says he is then he would find collectibles without the help of guides and/or YouTube video guides. This always makes him go batshit mental at me and throw shitty insults such as: (I'll put this as a recent convo between me and him)

Me: Can you not just find hidden items by, ya know, actually finding them?
Him: I just want the achievement
Me: Fair enough but do you have to use a guide? You say you are a "true gamer" but cant find hidden things without being shown where they are
Him:.....You bought a Dreamcast so dont talk down to me about games
Me: Yeah I did but ya know what? I didnt use guides to find collectibles on DC games

It pissed him off but shut him up as well
The Dreamcast remark annoyed the shit outta me though
Wow, really? A "true gamer" who sees buying a Dreamcast as a negative? That is mental.

That being said, I don't have the time to invest in treasure hunts these days and don't see completing them as a prerequisite to being a real gamer, so I have used a guide to (for example) find the last TWO collectible items in Infamous.

For Metroid prime, you should totally play those without a walkthrough though, at least for the first time through.

Absolutely. I would like to experience all the little things that a dev has put into the game, hidden or not. In the case of "Find 100 _____" such as in assassin's creed, I find there is no shame to using a guide as there is no value in finding all the items.

GTA III did it right. For every ten items I found, I got a new item respawn at my hideout. That was an in-game incentive to find the hidden items. In Assassin's Creed, I just have to find them for the sake of finding them. That just isn't useful and as such I use a guide to get the achievements.

If the devs aren't willing to have a reason to chase all the collectibles, then why should I hunt them down.

why not? It's basically impossible to find EVERYTHING in a game these days without being told where they are.. Getting all the flags in Assassins Creed for instance.. there are about 400 flags iirc.. Sure, some of them are in pretty easy to find locations once you know how they're placed, but that's still a LOT of flags to just track down on yourself. Collecting them WITH a guide is a solid week project, collecting them WITHOUT a guide.. I'd say that's impossible.

The 200 pigeons in Grand Theft Auto 4 as well.. They're tiny, and they're dark, and they're far out of the way.. Only a handfull are actually visible from the main roads. I cannot even fathom finding them all without a guide.
