The poll answer "No, only if I got really stuck at one part" is the one I answered with, but compared to some people I know, apparently I have a much more reliable breaking point.

For those people, if what they need to find isn't bouncing up and down in their face, they just in their minds claim they spent an hour looking with only turning around and walking 2 steps and getting a guide.

For me, I normally search every corner I can find, try to complete the objective for two game periods of time, which can amount to 3 hours, and then if I honestly have no idea what I'm supposed to do, I'll look up that one area and move on.

Guides suck. They take out all the fun of exploring and figuring stuff out for yourself. I like to try for 100% on games but when it's an open world game with half a billion collectibles I can happily skip out the boring collectathon and make do with my sub 100 percentage. It does annoy me a bit to be honest but I play games for fun. If I have to extensively do something that is not fun, I will just not do it. Sometimes collectibles can be fun to find but there I will put an emphasis on the FIND. Any fun you may have finding collectibles is drained when you plough through them with a guide. You also get a much greater sense of achievement if you do it yourself.

tl;dr: Guides suck.

I do buy a lot of game guides, and use them frequently. They are a good aid, and if I want to get 100% then I will :)

Also, that is what the game guides are for. If I pay good money for one I think I deserve the achievements :) al

as a side note i don't use the internet for guides, I buy the guides from shops.

I have used guides to achieve 100% on a few games. Usually to know where to find secret missions or quests that can extend my gaming experience.

There's quite a few games where the Easter Eggs etc. are close to impossible to figure out.

(Braid, I'm looking directly at you for two hours)

So, sure. But not until I've had a good play.

I only use guides when I'm stuck and just want to get back to the fun part of whatever game I'm playing.

I'm pleased to see that the "first blind run" is so ubiquitous. I thought I was being reckless when I do mine like that.

I would use it for special endings or If I get stuck. I usually don't try to use guides. Hell I only skimmed through my guide for Dead Rising 2 that I paid thirty dollars for.

It depends on the game, some are just plain impossible to find everything or if the game's a complete asshole, like Sonic 3, you'll need the guide just to reach the end.

I usually don't bother unless I'm horribly stuck. I like exploring and such.
Yeah, I'm an explorer type, too. Nevertheless, I could see myself using a strategy guide if the game was just massive and there was a good chance I'd miss out on a lot of stuff.
I sort of agree, but with a slight variation.

If it's a game I like, I'll probably play through it multiple times anyway. So I'll play through once regularly (at least) and then go for the completionist stuff later.

If I don't like the game, I'll probably never bother to go for completion anyway, at least not 100%.

So I probably won't do it immediately at the least.

That's a good point. For some reason, I see myself using a guide with a JRPG more so than some other genre of game. I don't even play those that often XD

100% on GTA: San Andreas. Dear lord, not the clamshells! I really think that game's impossible to get 100% without a guide because you wouldn't even know what sidequests resulted in percentage increases. I don't think games are designed anymore to get 100% without a guide. I just finished God of War Collection - two game filled with collectibles. The thing is, every room is impossible to get back to, so it's impossible to get all the gorgon eyes and phoenix feathers without at least two playthroughs and luck, and if you missed it the first time, you'll probably miss it the second. Fortunately for me, I don't care about that stupid bullcrap anymore.

the first time i do a game i do it blind, if i find secret stuff then awesome if not, never mind. the next time round i'll use a guide but only to find the stuff i haven't been able to randomly stumble across. i also will not use a guide for the main game, only bonus stuff.

Problem with the guides is they're not 100% guaranteed to work. For instance I once followed a guide for FFX-2 after beating it and getting the crappy ending, in order to get the good ending on the second playthrough. Well, after all my troubles, including beating douche in the infinimismo dungeron or w/e it was called I still only completed the game with 98%!!!! GAH! I ended up resorting to youtube to complete it / see the final ending scene.

If it's AC type stuff, like collect 100 feathers and 100 flags I will.

If I have been stuck on a puzzle for ages, I will.

If I Have been running in circles trying to figure out what the hell to do next, I will

To check if theres any hidden things, I will

Other than them, I never do.

Well in Fallout 3, some times I would be wandering the wasteland and anyone who has played this game would know there is a massive amount of places you can visit, many things to see and many special things you can do.

But after a normal blind run through the game I click the Tab button and look at my map of places and realize that even though I have discovered maybe 20-30 there is still 3-4 times that amount more to discover, so I looked at online guide which showed all the places. Also with some certain quests or people I got stuck on I would also use a guide, but this was on my second run through.

Point and click games, only in extreme situations. Useless Assassin's creed like collectibles, definetely
