Coincidently, i do work in the game industry as a level designer, at least for the moment (have been for a couple of months). Well, it has its ups and downs.

Notoriously poor working conditions, hours that ensure no work-life balance at all, and an industry where any idealism you may have gets crushed under the hob-nailed boot of your publisher? WHERE DO I SIGN UP?

I'll pass, thanks.
From the limited time i have spent in this position, i can say its not THAT bad. But yes, you are not completely off either.

Creative Director, ive been working my ass off to get high enough grades to get into Uni to study for it. I know it'll be hard to get that job but it's my dream job and if I don't go for it then I'll regret it forever.

Game Design, or programming. I'm a horrible artist, so if Game Design uses art, I'm going to be a programmer. But mainly I'd be a game designer.

Actually, yes.
Since I've been driving the road of a wannabe artist for quite som time, It would be a huge win for me to get into this kind of industry. Also, staring into computer all day long would make me want to spend my free time in more useful ways than drawing and gaming.

I'm in this gaming thing to play games, not to make them. still makes me pretty important to gaming companies: little sense in making a game when no one buys it. A friend of mine is actually training to become a programmer at IGAD, but he wants to make MMO's... and I'll never EVER play another MMO in my life (WoW was such a waste of time)

Ive always been very interested in the producer/designer side of things and at one point i even tried to get some work experience. However over time i realized that there is not enough industry here in Australia so i've gone with my other love, fitness.

I'm already a programmer who programs stuff. I've even done games before but never professionally. I think these days if I were to join the industry I'd prefer more of a designer/producer role. When I started programming games were still small and could be done by one person, now you need more so I'd like to be higher up in the team :D

There aren't? Even if you discount 2K Australia, TCA Brisbane and the like, there are still a number of aussie devs. In Adelaide there are at least 2 studios that I know of (I know people who work for them), so bigger cities are bound to have a more than a few.

Actually, you'd be surprised how easy some of it is. I've been in modding communities with people that submitted portfolios to various companies, and got hired to do 3D modeling/texturing/"skinning" for some [then] upcoming games. I knew a guy that did modeling work for the "Spiderman: Web of Shadows" game, where he met people that did the character work for "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed". No schooling needed. They were all self taught. Its rare, but it does happen. Going to school for it only gives you a better chance at getting that job.
Involvement with the mod scene and working on completed mods that highlight your skills is always a good thing when looking for an in to the industry. For a lot of people working on a mod is the closest their going to get to working on a published title, at least before they snare an industry job.

For artists wanting to give themselves a bit of an edge, look for opennings as texture artists because almost everyone HATES doing texture work.

OT: No, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't work in the games industry. Seeing as I've already turned down several job offers with game dev studios I think I can safely say I won't be in the future... (unless my cousin finally gets enough leverage to convince me to come work for his studio).

I would--if I was director. I micromanage, so I couldn't be permitted to work in a medium I enjoy without having control of the project.

I'd go for designer or programmer, I already know a little coding, and I like thinking up that sort of thing.

I definitely would like to try it, would be a blast to be an artist creating levels or people/creatures for different games.

I voted no. The only place I would work in the game industry would be with music or story production, and neither one makes me want to pursue it as a career. I am glad people do it though.
