If so what job and why? Assuming you got a chance to get a job in game development. Here are the roles

Artist - Draws stuff, concept art, uses 3d modeling to create environments

Programmer - Programs stuff

Designer - Think about ideas, plan levels, determine stats.

Producer - Plan stuff.

So basically, long hours, average pay but working with something you love.

ALTERNATE SCENARIO

If you had to go to school for a year to train, would your answer change?

Becoming a game programmer has been my goal for the past 4 years, and with my high school graduation next year I have even started researching how to get into the industry and what kind of an education would be required. If I had to go to school for a year then so be it.

Well I'd like to get a job as a level designer, so yes. But I'm going to college for visual effects and 3d animation, so if getting a job in the game industry doesn't pan out, I'm not stuck with an otherwise useless gaming degree (like a game design or game art degree) and can get a job in other fields of entertainment.

Absolutely. I'll be a programmer (tools or gameplay, doesn't matter for me right now). Already given out several resumes at TGC and ready to dive into it all. Definitely excited. Really hoping I get a job soon in it.

Notoriously poor working conditions, hours that ensure no work-life balance at all, and an industry where any idealism you may have gets crushed under the hob-nailed boot of your publisher? WHERE DO I SIGN UP?

I'll pass, thanks.

Designer. I'm pretty sure Writer would come under Designer though.

I actually want to be one as an occupation.

If I was independently wealthy or single with no responsibility? Sure! In my current situation, the video game world seems too risky to me. Companies are folding, bought out, and/or reorganized all the time. Even if you work for one that is very successful you have crazy deadlines, long hours, and the constant threat of the next generation's talent breathing down your neck.

Nah, I'd rather take my steady career in my field that does well regardless of economic situations and has very few deadlines that would require me to work long hours and be away from my family. As fun as working in gaming would be, family time and a steady, concrete job is more important to me by far.

If there was a maybe option, I would pick that. I'm still not sure what I want to do for in university yet, and I still have a year to decide, so I'll just say yes for this poll since I might decide to become a game programmer.

Lol, that's exactly what I'm currently doing, including the year of school, so yes. Hoping to land a job as a modeler, or in level design.

I would definitely be interested in working as a Producer; because I am always planning things, or trying to improve upon them by planning a better way to use/apply what has already been designed.

I would still be interested if I had to go to school for it; but wouldn't spend the time/money on the classes w/o a guarantee from an employer that I would be working in the industry. Without the guarantee, it just wouldn't be worth the impact that going to school would place on my family/household.

I would be interested in working in the industry, but only if I handled the "business" side of it - things like publishing, distribution, production, etc. I lack artistic talent and originality, so I'll leave that stuff to those who are actually talented.

I'd like to be a critic or a reporter as opposed to actually working on games. Still counts as part of the industry.
