Is it terrible that before I read the first post I voted 'cut the rope'?

Everyone who reads and thinks about one of these type of questions ads their own info to the question. So, when you hear "friend," some think of a buddy from work who's nice, but you could lose him. Others think of their best friend from forever who kept them from making a huge mistake or helped them move a body. You can't lose a friend like that. A big man, like myself, assumes he'll be able to save the person no matter what, whereas a smaller person immediately thinks about how they'd never be able to lift someone. Someone who has gone climbing thinks about their skill and a specific way to save both and so on.

These questions are always interesting because people say "ignore the content, it's about the choice" but the content makes a bigger difference than you think. Me? I'm a big guy, trying for a job that may actually put me in a dilemma, so I think I'd try to save him, even if it sent me to the abyss.

I would rather die trying to be a hero (no matter how un-heroic the outcome may be), than live with survivor's guilt the rest of my days.

They way you posted it there is no moral dilemma. Either you both die, or one of you dies. It matter not who makes the choice, because really you have no choice. You cut the rope and go on living.

A moral dilemma would be more along the lines of do you save your wife while killing yourself in the process. Then it becomes more of question of do you allow someone you love to die, or do you die in the process of saving them.

The Golden Rule: Do to others what you would have them do to you.
So if I was in his position, where it is either, I die or we both die, I'd want him to cut the rope, therefore, I'd cut the rope. Realisticly though, I probably wouldn't know that I would die if I tried to save him and in the end we'd both end up dead.

EDIT: I haven't voted, mainly because I don't know which one you would want me to vote for (logic or reality)
