Its good how people are honest (sadistic) Escapists.

OT:I would never go mountain climbing and if I did it would be in Modern Warfare 2 or in my dreams AND! it depends on which friend it is.

Answer: Cut the rope. 2-2=0=More unhappy people. 2-1=1=Less Unhappy People. He would understand.

Cut the rope! I'm not close enough to any of my friends to die for them...

I'd cut the rope, as I am more important to me than anyone else. Also, knowing that we'd both die, I wouldn't be able to cut the rope fast enough. I'd probably yell down with my new found clairvoyance though.

The option of letting them die would likely not come to me, I would just try to save them.

I'm dumb in situations like that but they usually lead to me doing good so eeyyyyyyyyyyyyy:p

Try to help him at first, if I can't and I'm about to fall then... sorry buddy... Also how bad are the friends injuries? If he can't walk or he's losing blood fast and dying, then I'd cut the rope. But by god, nobody should ever have to make a choice, but it happens every day.

Clearly, the utilitarian morality would point me towards cutting the rope. Why let two die when you can let one die?

Everyone who reads and thinks about one of these type of questions ads their own info to the question. So, when you hear "friend," some think of a buddy from work who's nice, but you could lose him. Others think of their best friend from forever who kept them from making a huge mistake or helped them move a body. You can't lose a friend like that. A big man, like myself, assumes he'll be able to save the person no matter what, whereas a smaller person immediately thinks about how they'd never be able to lift someone. Someone who has gone climbing thinks about their skill and a specific way to save both and so on.

These questions are always interesting because people say "ignore the content, it's about the choice" but the content makes a bigger difference than you think. Me? I'm a big guy, trying for a job that may actually put me in a dilemma, so I think I'd try to save him, even if it sent me to the abyss.
Very good point, although I am small and have zero climbing experience I would try to save him. However I will not even try to claim its because of trying to save their life. Of course the fact he is a friend would be a small part but if you come back without them that could ruin your life. For example there was a group of rugby players who got charged with rape then proven innocent however, their lives are ruined anyway. Very few employers could stand to hire a person who could be a rapist, especially with all the media. For everyone also, think about adrenaline. It lets people have crazy strength and hopefully it would kick in here.

Way to may factors to consider. If i decided that it was both of us or just him, i'd cut the rope.

2-2=0
2-1=1

1 is more than 0.

Math. Its irrefutable.
First off epic fail math there dude...
Its more of a equation like this...(Change per person based of weight of self, Friend, knowledge, and your strength)
Save 1=70% chance 1 survives, fumbling for a knife while being pulled off the edge.+when they find you dead they realize you were going for a knife and your a coward or come back alone a murderer in everyones eyes and a coward.(They will look at the body and even if its justified they will think it)
Save both=20% chance Try to brace yourself and at least get them a chance to get a hold.+if found dead you will be mourned as a hero, or be a hero when you BOTH come back.
Also i would like to point out that if your saying save yourself just because its more likely then congrats your a utilitarianist.
EDIT* I think it would be a fantastic social test to create another poll saying its your girlfriend who slipped off instead and compare the two results!

Try to save him, for as long as I could, and when it is impossible to continue and I'll definitely die I'll cut it. At least I tried.

See, I can't take this question seriously, because there's no way in hell I'd ever go mountain climbing.

But if I found myself in that position, I'd cut the rope in an instant. I like to believe my friend would too. Sure, I'd mourn him, but I wouldn't blame myself. It was me or him, and the survival instinct overpowers the preservation instinct every time.

Cut the rope. It doesn't matter which of my friends it is, I'd cut the bloody rope.
But really, I'd never be moutian climbing, thus avoiding the senerio all together.
Though I have a few friends that , as long as they fell first, their guts would make great cushioning.
Damn man, that's cold.

With the options given, you're an idiot if you pick anything other than "cut the rope".

It's not saying you have a chance of pulling him up. The choice involved states that you WILL BOTH DIE if you try to save your friend, whereas cutting the rope indicates that one of you will survive.

If I was on the lower end of the rope and the other person was left with this choice, I would be calling my friend a fucktard all the way to the bottom...not only did I get myself killed, but I got my sappy ass friend killed too because he couldn't man up and do what was necessary.

I would try save my friend to be honest, but to be even more honest I am not the type of person to go mountain climbing.

but I am one to go sky diving so maybe i'll still meet my demise when my friend's or my own parachute doesn't open.

Dear God, kill my friend.

No persons life is more important than my own.
Is it sad that I laughed at this post?

But I may do this, and say that instead of killing him I tried to save him but he fell anyway, or say that my friend wanted me to do it so I'd live.

Try to save them. Even aside from personal moral standards, I just don't have it in me to undertake an action to deliberately kill someone.

After a brutal failed attempt to save us both, I'd be forced to cut the rope. My friend would probably be yelling at me to cut it the whole time...

Pull him up.

It's worth the risk. Possibly both survive, or both die knowing your last action was noble.
